What are the opinions of a g/box behind a 350 Chev in an LH? Bearing in mind I dont want to pay $3000 ... Muncie M22? Tremec TKO? Ford?

Rory, bang for your buck, with reliability in mind, can't go past the old Ford Toploader. People say they don't like to shift very much, but I never had any drama's with mine shifting up to 6500rpm. They are pretty strong, easy to come by, and won't break the bank.
Tremec's are awesome, but you wont see much change out of 5 or 6 grand by the time you get it in there. $3000 will see you a toploader with plenty of change, or if your lucky maybe even a super T-10. Super T-10's are known for their great reliability and smooth shifting at almost any rpm.

I'm running a toploader in mine, there are a few mods you can do to help with the shifting, and running the right oil makes a big difference... I use a good quality 80W140 (sounds heavy I know, but in a high temp race situation its the go).

I'm running a hurst indy, one of the things that really helped was changing the standard hurst shifter lever for a much longer one, so you dont have to move your hand so far from the wheel, which helps when things are happening in a hurry...

You wont setup a Muncie, Super T10 or Tremec for under $3000, most will be more.
Cheapest option is Toploader, then Celica 5 then a T5.
We just put a Toploader behind our SBC, we already had the reco box, another $1500 for clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, speedo cable, shorten tailshaft, x member, mount and shifter. Not including labour or the cost of the trans. Bet on $3k and you'll be right.
