LH: 1435 MM
VL: 1526 MM
VN: 1564 MM
From Chopper.
I spent all morning at 3 wreckers...here is what I found.
I got 1450 on 2 LH diffs I just measured.,One was a Sunbird UC with Salisbury, the other banjo.
VL drum or disc 1540..close enough
Here is the interesting bit
Pintara/R31 Skyline B/W diff housing with rear cable handbrake discs is 1460mm
Comes with Panhard rod fitting as well.Bare with no brakes on it the housing measures 1335mm, the LH one is 1325mm. Iam guessing fit 28 spline HQ pattern axles and drill some blank rear discs or the ones that are there and away you go after welding on the suspension brackets.
I need to confirm that the centre is the same size and fit as a VL so I can just bolt in a full spool with the axles.
The wrecker said $150 complete.
He also says he sells them to the sprint car guys here running 600HP and they fit a full spool with 28 spline axles and no one has ever broken one.
I am in if that is the case.
Comments?

This is very interesting as Pintara/R31 diffs are very easy to get hold of and lots of them a rear disc already aswell..
Let us know how the research goes Rory

Yep, Skyline is 28 spline. Don't get Pintara though - they're 25 spline.
I think they're 2 pinion though... but if you're running a spool that won't matter at all. They're the same centre as VL.
I couldn't buy blank skyline rotors - I don't think they sell them. I just drilled new holes, but with one of the 4 holes slotted. The diff shop was fine with that.
The rear brakes on the skyline diff are awesome. The handbrake works directly on the disc brakes, rather than having a small drum system like the VL.
I've done a fair bit of research into these when I was converting my LC to skyline borgwarner. What else can I tell you....
Your plan to use HQ axles is an interesting one, and something I hadn't thought of. I want to change my diff to HQ stud pattern now!! I will look into axle lengths now! Thanks!!
PS. There are 9 second VLs still using BW diffs, with transbrakes and never have any problems with the strength. Just get billet axles and full spool if you are concerned. I have a transbrake in my LC with 450hp and don't plan on changing to 9 inch. I think it should hold up fine.

Awesome guys!
I reckon the brake cables are even long enough to get to the Torana junction.
This is a HUGE win!!
Funny thing..one of the wreckers said an auto diff was $150 and a manual diff was $395.??? No idea why..maybe the manuals were all LSD.
The Pintara diffs are exactly the same so it doesnt matter if I get either as the axles and centre all have to be changed.

99% sure they are 28 chopHQ V8 Salisbury axles I'm sure have 23 splines. I will be removing a pair at some stage, so I can check if you can't.

No, manuals were not all LSD. The 'Silhouette' and GTS models had factory fitted LSD. It was probably an upgrade option as well, but most are open wheelers.Funny thing..one of the wreckers said an auto diff was $150 and a manual diff was $395.??? No idea why..maybe the manuals were all LSD.
The manual version has 3.7:1 ratio, whereas the automatic version has 3.9:1. (You might want to check that I have them around the right way - as I may have them confused). But this still doesn't seem to worthy of charging $395!!! No idea why they want that much. I bought my R31 skyline diff complete with the disc brakes, centre and axles for about $175. I bought the tailshaft as well for the yoke/flange, the handbrake and handbrake cable.

Scored a complete Skyline R31 diff /axles/brakes/cables and all for $100.
First quote is..Into jig, weld on suspension pickups. $330 Weld up and redrill axles (28 spline) and discs $190.
$600 for a set up VL style diff ready for a full spool centre. Skyline also comes with a 3.7 crown wheel.

A 1468mm diff would put the track out by 30mm with standard rims. The National code of practice allows a maximum track increase of 25mm.

You mean John Taverna Chassis in Leo St. Fawkner, VIC?I was told by Phil Taverna Chassis that the standard LX torana diff is 56.5 inches or 1435mm.
