Great work,
Nothing like fixing up rusty old hatches to pass the time.

Thanks Deerin,
Plenty of time spent on this one.

Wait to you see the c pillars! I don't want to take shortcuts. This is what my exploration cuts exposed. Surprise...........more rust!

Yeah, looks familiar, take a look at my build thread (hatch project) if you already haven't.
I did my c-pillars a couple of weeks ago.

Fixed both the C pillars. I used the rare spares parts.
I found they needed a little dolly work to get the shape right. Because the old c pillars were bogged over I took a guess at the join line. Do you think it is right?
The hatch rubber rails had to made up from scratch and took all 2 of my brain cells to remember the fold directions. I also noticed they curve around so needed to be bowed.

Has any one put drainage holes in their C pillars?
Fill them up with fish oil??

I added drain holes to my c pillars.
I simply drilled 2 x 1/4" holes in each inner pillar panel before i rebuilt the outer sections.
The moisture will drain down into the lower quarter and out through drain holes i have drilled there as well.
A generous application of fish oil etc will also be sprayed in the pillars, rear of the roof around the hinges, beaver panel lower quarters etc, etc, etc.
Hopefully no more rust!

I've been watching yoose blokes working and commenting on each others threads and well done to yoose all! :spoton:
I did these repairs to my son's car some years ago and know what's involved.

My comment is that once repaired, I would not drive the bloody thing in the rain ever again and keep the bloody thing garaged so nobody has to ever do it again! :)

Even if you don't drive the car in the rain when you wash it water will still enter through the hatch hinges and eventually make it into the pillars. Cheap insurance i recon.

Cheers for the tips guys!
Does cavity wax apply in the same way has fish oil using a compressor? Can you drill the drainage holes after the repair?
Is there a brand of cavity wax you recommend?

No experience with cavity wax yet.
The holes can only be drilled with the outer pillar sections removed (i think? if i am wrong i am sure someone will correct me)

Time to get rid of the truck tail lights.
When I bought the hatch I couldn't figure out why the rear hatch rubber kept falling out.
It wasn't until l looked closer that I realised that the whole rubber channel wasn't there! That is light you can see in the rail.
They had just filled it with bog!
I had to hammer the UC light support back as it hits the LX Lights. The LX are further recessed.
I then unpicked the corners and got a rare spares replacement.
Do you guys strip the black off rare spares parts and prime them? I did.
I also cut out the UC tyre well as I have a lovely brand new drop tank to fit. Yay!!!
Ran out of welding wire!
Do you have to carry a spare for Rego?

I got bored and decided to fit the tank for a look.
I had to see what it looks like.
Once i weld the tail lights in it will look sick!
Anyone got recommendations on fuel pumps? I will be running a 304 VN motor with a Harrop manifod and a 600 Holley. I eventually want to get a 355 stroker kit.

Cut out the rear tail lights and prepared the donors.
It took a long time to get them square and even longer to weld them in.
Best days work so far!

Nup! I don't like it!
You'll have to cut them out and put the old ones back on. Then send those LX ones to me so I can use them......errm..... I mean dispose of them for you :innocent:
