Sorry for interrupting this thread but what does it mean by 9 port and 12 port?

I am looking at the post kiwi-lilj with photos but can't tell or either I'm looking at it wrong.

9 port (pre VB) had siamesed inlet ports. 12 port has an individual inlet and outlet port for both the intake and exhaust on each cylidner.

Madjzed, obviously the second one doesnt have posts, its a 12 port....

BTT, first one does look like a YT st3 from the shots, a pick of the back of the head if it has any numbers on it would be handy.

Second one, the 12 port, the valve holes look a touch bigger than stock, other than that hard to tell. Not sure if YT modded 12 ports, they did cast them in iron or alloy, but they had YT stamped all over them.

Cheers.

Impossible to tell anything from that shot, but is that a 12 port?

The round/D shaped exhaust port was a pretty cool trick in the 80's, if it does anything is beyond me.

Not cast from the factory like that, they were usually welded, then ported like that with a divider fitted into the inlet port to make them 12 port instead of 9.

Looking closely at it ,You could do this conversion on a radial arm drill.bore out the ports with an offset cutter, then press in the sleeves into the head, then seal weld the port. Then die grind the ports till their blended smoothly.
Phew...how much time have you got...Still love to know who created this head.Very talented.

I thought that XU1 heads had similar exhaust ports to that head, but not that big. Interesting head, whopping great cam for that to work.

I recon the results would be underwhelming.

I reckon you'd be right. Bigger isn't always better.

Stupid question

I reckon you would need a copper exhaust gasket 😂made to stop it blowing through?

Just my thoughts

What effect on peformance would that have.minimal?

That  12 port head of yours with the aluminium divider was  called  a   * Bathurst  12000 *  model by yella terra but they have not been produced for many years now  . l have one here that l bought approx.  25 years ago in Australia and then tried to bring it back to NZ   as   cabin baggage  . l borrowed a  soft bag from my bro - in - law and wrapped it up  and  carried it through customs long before metal detectors came into use between  Oz  and NZ    . Unfortunately   there was a guy waiting  who was physically checking cabin bag weights so when l put my bag down and he tried to pick it up he nearly fell over  not expecting the weight it actually  was .  Nice gentleman put it in the hold for free though  for me saying that if it fell out of the overhead locker it would kill somebody .   Someone has had a go at your head , they didn't come out the factory with  those big D shaped exhausts  but had  modified square ports ...............look like a nice job though  all the same .
