So i got a 4l65e auto in a WB Statesman. Just wondering what others have done in similar situation where you have an electronic speedo drive in the gearbox and mechanical speedometer. I have been told about cable-x which is a converter or i can have my mechanical speedometer converted to electronic.
im interested in what others have done

I used a cable-X on mine...because I wanted to keep the original speedo. Have seen pics of people who use converted/electronic speedometers as well that didn't look too bad.

Just took a couple goes getting the speed nailed down right but once it was done been fine ever since. There are a heap of dip switches so you can adjust the output for any tire size, diff ratio, etc, etc. (The manual it came with is for MPH so I just converted the output speed again to K's so my speedo reads right on.

Cable-X is the simplest option.

$495 from CRS.

http://www.rodshop.c...t&part_type=129

Around USD $340  plus shipping in the USA.

http://www.abbott-ta...m/orderpage.htm

The weak Australian dollar makes the CRS price reasonable.

Oh, and the cable that had come with my Cable-x didn't fit the Torana cluster, so I just had a cable made there (Ringwood Speedo in Vic) and worked perfectly then.

Oh, and I got lucky and found mine new in the box at a swap meet...been some years now but think it was like $40 or something from memory. :D

By the way... Dakota Digital is doing one now too, think it is similar in price to the Cable-X. Haven't used one of theirs but am happy with the tach adapter I got from them at least.

I'm copying this VDO speedo conversion.

It's about half way down the page.

The Cable X is connected to the factory speed sensor (I think this is correct) but will the factory speed sensor still be plugged into the factory loom so that if I decide to use the Commodore cruise control i think the PCM would need the speed sensor data.

Thanks

The transmission speed sensor is connected to the ECU speed input. The Cable X is connected to the ECU speed output which is normally connected to an electronic speedo.

Rightyo. Thank you. That makes sense. I thought it replaced the factory speed sensor or spliced into the speed sensor loom.
Thanks mate

The speed output should be in my cuicuit diagram

You may have trouble with that Bart? LS engined Commodores also take a speed sensor input from the ABS sensor on each wheel, this is not only used for ABS and traction control but appears to affect the speedo as well.

There are many reports of people changing diff ratios in their late-model Commodores and the speedo still reads correct, without changing speedo gears or reprogramming the ECU.

It seems the VSS on the trans feeds the ECU, but that's not what's used to signal the cluster, however I've also read that if there's too much difference between the two systems (like a really low geared diff) it will throw a CEL & fault code, so the VSS must also be used in the equation somehow?

Ok, i got the whole commodore so it may be possible to pull the bits thats needed. But this will be later if i do this

Just took the old girl out for a test drive expecting to shred tires but unfortunately it didn't do much at all, its kind of stuck in top gear! Flatten the pedal to the boards and takes of like a boat very gently. Need some neck snapping action :)
Would this be related to the computer not knowing the speed of the vehicle? (Speedo not connected yet) I know the elec diagram shows vehicle speed sensor on pin 50 on red connector of computer.
Any ideas?

Are all the engine and box sensors plugged in?

What PCM do you have?  Who removed the VATS from it?

This is the type of PCM. I don't know the model of it. But the whole thing is out of a VY Senator 2003
Not sure of all the sensors but the speedo inst plugged in. I wonder if that's the issue.
Some bloke from PCM Hacking deleted the VATS for me.
I know there was a gearbox switch/selector on the side of the gearbox which I removed

Nah, you've got a lot of problems here. lol

Is the VSS plugged into the box?

Never trust these blokes to screw with your PCM.

They totally #@$^%& mine (also VY).  My thing ran like shit, no balls, missing when cruising etc...

Took it to a real tuner and they put it on the dyno and mapped it properly. No spanners or parts required and 223 rwkw.

I sold the factory loom and bought a hotrod conversion loom from PSI conversions in the states.
