Fiction. I was called to a dedicated LPG Commodore recently with a flat tyre. It didn't have a spare but it did have a can of goop and a compressor. Problem was it went flat at 110kph on the freeway and by the time he got into the service lane the tyre was trashed. The goop would not of fixed it and I doubt whether a field of freshly slashed grass would have fixed the side wall.

Fact

its fact it was on bush mechanics years ago.

much to my surprize they jammed in as much grass as they could poking it in with sticks. after they broke the bead, side walls where still ok though.

they got far enough to get it repaired,  maybe not high speed though.

If you have a Gilmer drive you'll need to tooth them first :)

Speaking of Gilmer drives...

Fact or Fiction: The Holden V8 prototype was originally designed with a cam drive belt?

Ah who am I kidding, I can't wait for all you clowns to wake up...

Fact. This is one of the first ever Holden V8's fitted to the 1969 Hurricane prototype vehicle:

I fail to see ANY CAM belt drive.

AND, FWIW, that car has been way modded from it's original concept...

Water pump, most probably to clear the cockpit.

Look at the thickness of (what would be) the timing cover, it's only about a third as thick as the later chain-driven design and has nowhere near enough space to house sprockets and a chain.

The only thing in there would be the cam retainer, oil pump drive and an oil seal.

It is thinner due to the face there is no water pump present.

Time to go out to your shed and have a look at the width of a typical Holden V8 timing cover...

The balancer on the prototype engine obviously must have a sprocket behind it to drive the belt so I assume the oil seal would be further in toward the front main cap?

Anyway, I guess there's no way to prove one way or the other unless someone has keys to the Holden museum and a basic tool kit?

I'm just going by what my eyes tell me, why else would they bother with a toothed belt if not to time the cam? I don't think Gilmer drives were around in 1969 were they?

Anyhow, you probably right, what I thought was the water pump is the A/c pump, the front of this motor have obliviously been modified from it's first incarnation, I doubt very much there was access to CNC alloy machining.
Also, that radiator...
Would love to see an original photo of this engine insitu.

The motor in it now is not original. I'm with you Terry. Cam not belt driven.

I am as hung over as hell this morning so probably dribbling, but it seems like a lot of work just for an ancillary drive. Why wouldn't they just run the pump from the crank? I also don't buy that the standard water pump would not do the job. It would certainly fit in the same space as the inlet and outlet pipes currently used. I also think if this setup was all for the water pump they would have used a larger sprocket on the crank and smaller ones for the pump and idler.     Man I have a headache.

OK, to prove my point, look real hard at the timing pointer, there is a wire stuck in the center of the top pulley, to point at the marks on the balancer.
If the whole top part was a gear and not an idler pulley you would not be able to leave a piece of wire in there to time anything whilst rotating the crank/cam...
