Hi all

I've got a holden lj torana with a 202 and a 350 Holley. One day i started the car up and it just kept backfiring through the exhaust, nonstop. The spark plugs are new, the leads are new and the dizzy cap is new. The RAA told me to replace the points and check the timing so i did. Still not fixed. I got my mechanic to look at it, he tuned the carby, got the timing right and it seemed to be running fine. The next day i went to start it up and it was back to the way it was, backfiring out the exhaust...HELP!

Sounds like intermitant power. If it came good for a bit after the timing was done I'd check the wire from coil to points. If it's not that try hotwiring it, run power from battery to positive on the coil if it comes good then your problem is probably somewhere in the wiring before the coil.

Is the backfiring happening on decelleration?

Also check that the roll pin on the base of the distributor shaft that holds the drive gear on hasn't sheared. If it does, it can allow the dizzy drive gear to rotate on the shaft, which will really screw up your timing. If it does break, quite often it will still catch in a prticular position for a while before moving again - this might have been why readjusting the timing fixed the problem for a while.

Could also possibly be a stuck valve - a compression check will find out.

Make sure you can turn the rotor by and and that it springs back.

Check the dizzy cap for cracks or carbon tracking under the cap.

try another coil if you got one. these can give inconsistent spark when on the way out

The twin dizzy carby? I think the problem was not in the carburettor, but in the fuel tank. I had a problem with my motor about 2months ago which turned out to be stale fuel. Once i put a fresh tank of fuel in and a couple of kms on it, it all came good!

Cheers
Keith
