I wouldn't mind Clear lenses for mine... 12/73.

Is there any legal issues with changing from orange to clear?

My understanding is that clear indicators were fitted to models that didn't have park lights incorporated in the headlights. these models used clear indicators as park lights. If you fit yellow indicators on such a vehicle, you would also need to modify the headlights to incorporate park lights...

Hi Guys.

I'm sure this has been done to death by now, but anyway.

The amber (orange) front blinker lens were only fitted to LJs that had the park lights in the headlights. If you fit these lenses to early cars you will have amber parking lights & that IS illegal.

This changed in production in Feb/Mar '73 & is on all cars that have a chassis number prefixed 'BLJ'. So 'ALJ' cars or any '72 cars have white lenses.

So, basically you are not allowed to have any coloured front parking lights other than white on any car, but white front blinkers are not allowed after '72

Dr Terry.

AS far as i no all lc lj toranas use the indicators as the parking lights clear or orange , pull the switch half way out an see :D

Mines a 5/72 Brisbane Built 4dr and has clear lenses.

whipple-202 - i think you will find that this is not the case as Dr Tery said early 73 cars had amber and in built parkers into the headlamp Not the blinker assembly.

Both my 73 cars (5/73 SL & 9/73 S) have orange indicators with parkers in the headlights.

So why arent you allowed to have clear lenses on a BLJ car? I can see why you cant put orange lenses on a pre-orange lense car, but why not the other way around?

so from what i have gathered from previos posts is that BLJ cars are supposed to have the parkers in the headlights and amber lenses and it it also illegal to put amber lenses on a clear lense car coz that would make the parkers amber thus:illegal.so my lights are like an early set up but in a later car.

Yeah, we've determined that bit.

What I'm trying to find out is why it is illegal to have clear lenses on a BLJ...

As long as you had orange globes inside the clear indicators, I could not see a problem. You see VN Commodore's with clear indicators and orange globes, and they originaly had orange lenses.

I think Clear would go better on my Purr Pull LJ... And I've gotta get new indicator lenses and housings anyway.

Just from a safety point of view, I think its well worth modifying clear parker/blinker combos. Its just not as noticeable that the white light is flashing with the parker behind it and the additional competition from the headlamps. Use to have a valiant where the parking/blinker lamps were in the top of the fenders, people just didnt notice the indicators when the headlights were on, and yes the correct tail/stoplamp globes were fitted. Best thing I did was fit some cheap amber lights below the bumper for the blinkers.
I think we have a better system than the canadians, only red lamps at the rear for tail stop and blinkers.
