not as much done to the car as i had hoped for this weekend which is disappointing. dad and i finally got the 253 out of the trailer and on to the stand and in the shed. we also gave it a little squirt with a Karcher (using the tank....) but ran out of degreaser so it didnt come up too clean! :tease:

thanks for the reply Neil.

The beaver panel is fine i am able to swap that over from the parts car.
most of the boot section of that rust i can get from the parts car but the rear quarter section i can't as that too is rusted out on the parts car...
i guess i could cut out the rail from the parts car but will that effect the strength of it in anyway?

heres what im looking at with the spare car... still plenty of rust but no holes appeared when i wire wheeled it. im not happy with the section i removed for the beaver panel so i will be cutting out another section from it.

As you can see the lower quarter is stuffed so i cant use that part of it... what do people think? where should i go from here?

Cheers Leigh

Hi
Once welded up should be just as strong as before. You might be able to patch up the rail off you donar car with some more steel and shape it with a hammer and dolly. If you get realy stuck you might have a pannel beater who might do cash jobs after work might be able to help. I feel sorry for you guys having rust, my torry seems to of escaped the dreaded tin worm.

thanks for that Neil. I think i will just start "un-picking" it as best as i can and see how i go. im sure there is someone round here who does those sorts of jobs. i actually tried to get in contact with an old friends father who was right into cars and he had done quite a few GTR's last time i saw him which was before he moved a few years ago....
your a lucky man if your car has escaped it! :spoton:

Thanks Leigh

That section of the chassis rail isn't even really structural metal... or it's not important structural metal anyway. If you get rear ended hard, it's gonna need to be replaced anyway. So it has very little purpose. Fix it so it looks good enough for you to be happy with it, welding it should make it much weaker anyway if it's done half-decently.

I was smart enough to not cut that section of my car out (i missed it by about 50mm lol) so even if it is rusted, I don't have to worry about repairing it.

^ oh sweet! good to here. yeah bodywork... i have no clue either Heath! :tease: so far i have just been making it up as i go along...

ok so i finally bit the bullet and attacked that rear section with the grinder... a few sections werent accessible by the grinder so a hack saw blade was used... bit of a hack but the rust is gone! it got too dark for me to go out to the spare to cut out the repair section so it will have to wait. heres some pics:

I only got two weeks. And one was dedicated to non-car-related activities.

Mate I've done all my welding with gasless and it's shithouse stuff to use. Especially on thin metal like a torana.

Throw that shit in the bin and go buy some gas and some decent wire :)

Hurry up mate Ive got a bit further ahead of ya now.. Chop Chop

well i went out and set up the welder today and had plans to make a trolley for it.

azza i tip my hat to you if you have managed to do your welding with gasless as i found it impossible to weld thin metal from the torana!! i was just practising on a bit of scrap and i could manage a shitty tack but found it impossible to try and make a continuous weld without burning through. i had the welder set to minimum settings too....

the plan was always to go with gas wire so thats definately what i will be doing, and plus this gasless stuff is bloody messy!!!! its worse then a arc welder!!!! anyways hopefully getting some gas wire tonight 0.6mm and then try and organise gas sometime in the next week, then i should be able to do a bit better.

mind you i did do a bit of welding on some thicker material and the gasless stuff produced a beautiful weld, and i had just randomly set the settings on the machine!

anyone have any ideas on how i should go about making a trolley for the welder?

Cheers

Got a pic of the welder? That'll help for ideas for a trolley.

Just make a little frame with some wheels for it to sit on. Use some 90 degree stuff.
