Hi all

A bit of a quiz for the LC/LJ mob - which of the below is the original GMH Lion insert and which is the aftermarket?

Hi Bazza.

I think the one on the left looks more original. It seems to be embossed, whereas the one on the right looks printed.

Also the factory locating tag, just visible at around 2 o'clock on the one on the left, doesn't seem to exist on the one on the right.

Agree with Dr Terry - the one on the right is a Rare's one...

Trick question?
The lions head on the left one doesn't look right to me either?

The insert on the extreme left is from the Rare Spares site. The one on the right is the one that I came with my car. The seller assured me that it was original GMH and that the shiny raised ones were after-market. The one on the right is raised a little but he referred to them as "flat ones". There are a lot of the "shiny raised" ones being sold on eBay as "original". The raised ones look too modern and cheesy to me. I am still not 100% sure - but the truth is out there.

Maybe Rares have updated the design then - I have one of the middle ones here (I'll try to find it) that must be original as I've had it for about ten years. I was pretty sure the one on the right was from Rares as I've seen them offered cheaper at swapmeets than the middle one...

Thank Flamenco

I am always interested in establishing the facts. The left one and the middle ones are very similar (if not identical). The middle one I bought as "original" on eBay, I was a bit suspicious but I only wanted it to paint black in any case. I got it for about $40 a year ago - they are going for $100 plus now.

might be and error of paralax or my vision but I got couple of old ones ,originals
dents and scratches but the lions are clear and
the ear looks diff, not as pronounced as in pics left & middle
the ball or globe is diff could be shadow in pic
the left leg is finer, thinner looking
and the base of the mane and mane itself looks diff
and the rear left foot has toes on mine, again could be pic/my eyesight
also the inserts completely fill the recessed area no sign of the indent top left or any of the floor of the recess

Hi

The more I think about it and look at it closely it, the more I think the one on the right is original. The one on the left doesn't fit perfectly into the recess and looks too "new". It is bright chrome and gloss black - the one on the left is silver on a more subdued black.

If your making an XU-1 replica, I think the black caps had no decal and were just a plain cap painted. I could be wrong.

I dunno now, I'm still looking for my old one (agree about the badge taking up all the inside and the tag not being visible). I was only talking about which cap was original out of the ones shown rodomo (not whether it suited an xu1) :)

with me sitting here looking at the pics the one on my left is the right one, it suites all lc gtrs and lc xu-1s, the one on the right the platform the lion is sitting on is way to thick. and getting back to a earler post about the xu-1s having a all black cap, well that is not true has the lc xu-1 supported the lion aswell, only in mid to late 72 did the xu-1 take on the all black cap.

and there is my head on the chopping block once again.

cheers the gong

Hi

I heard just today, that sometimes Adelaide XU-1s left the factory with a black cap with a black/chrome lion insert. I hadn't heard that one before.

tuffgong - there are original LC XU-1 publicity shots of cars fitted with an all black cap. The Feb '72 parts catalogue shows a separate part number for the LJ XU-1.

Maybe it's another one of the those Brisbane/Adelaide anomalies.

Hi

There are original publicity shots showing the LC XU-1 with an all black cap. Can someone with an LC Parts Manual take a look and post what it says about LC fuel caps?

Thanks

bazza, on page 86 of the fiv antoniou xu-1 book. note THE BOTTOM LEFT HAND FUEL FILLER CAP WAS USED ON THE GTR AND GTR XU-1 ALTHOUGH MID 1972 GTR XU-1S SPORTED A SIMILAR CAP BUT WITH AN ALL BLACK RIM INSTEAD OF CROME. GM PART NO 2816161.
this number does apear in the lc parts manuel but so does the 2805021 for the 186x engine prefix

cheers john

Hi

John - in essence you are saying the the LC parts catalogue gives a special cap to the XU-1 (the same part number as the LJ parts manual).

Secondly, I have spoken to someone who had a big input into the Fiv Antoniou book and believe me, there are a lot of errors and this book should not be taken as gospel.
