i have seen a few red yella terra stage 3 heads and to be honest they look like a stock head with slightly bigger exhaust ports and bigger valve springs.
my head is supposedly a stage 3 head (hand ported in a engine shop not from yella terra) and putting it beside the YT stage 3 heads and there are HUGE differences in the ports etc.
i wish there was a drag strip in my area, all this talk of what stock VN's etc do over the quarter and compared to how my car goes up against them on the street etc i would be very suprised if i didn't do a mid 14's pass ....
anyways, this isn't about my car, i reckon either get a better head or work the one you have .... i've seen a stock blue 202 head with larger exhaust valves put onto the above motor which had the red stage 3 YT head and it crapped all over it .... thats just a mostly stock blue 202 head!

also on the point of the diff gears, 3.08 gears would have wound out further perhaps a higher top speed, but the 3.55 will take off quicker and generally slower top speed or rev alot higher when crossing the finish line
Atleast you will no how things are run as you been before
Good luck with it and keep us posted

the car goes real hard, but it really cant get traction
to take off at drags, i rev to 3500 slowly let clutch off, so no wheel spining then let it off and it still spins heaps, any tips.. ? needs wider tyres, these 195's suck
keith, u say u launch at 1500rpm? in our car it would stall, needs at least 2200rpm and u have a bigger cam? yours is 2800-6200 im guessing.
also... our cam goes from 2200-5200, so should i set shift light at 5200?
Cheers,
nathan

For that run i stalled my car up on the clutch and just zoomed off the line! But my clutch wasnt happy after that!!
My cam's powerband is 2500 - 5800 (if i remember correctly)! I tried multiple things like short shifting, revving higher, shifting on cam... What i found is that the motor was leaning out up top, so that leads me to believe a few things (aside from the carby's not tuned properly). 1. My cam must be out of its power range, or 2. I need to port the head some more!
I fiddled with the Holley a bit (and achieved my best time), but still i think it could run better times yet! My optimum shift point is 6100rpm, i found thats the best. Short shifting gave a slower time with higher mph, over revving gave no benefits!!
I would set your shift light at 5500rpm, see how you go (take a pen and paper with you). Write down after each run how you went about your run (shift points, time's and mph), then up your shift point to 5700rpm, write down your details, then try 6000rpm (yadda yadda). Thats how i worked it out! Also practice a few different launch techniques too! Try 1500rpm, 2000rpm, 2500rpm, 4000rpm and 4500rpm. See what works for you basically!

Get it on the dyno and i'll bet you come out with a different car that wants to go!
*EDIT: could of got a bargain 2 months back, my old wade supercharger was on eBay and the bloke still had the manifold for the 179, ended up going on a railcar *

my best suggestion for shift points without going on a dyno is to drive your car down the road flat knacker and let it rev till the power drops off, that will give you a fairly good starting point for your shift points .....
my motor with the above cam in it used to rev to 7000rpm no problems, but after about 5800rpm it just didn't make bugger al power, it was all noise, and 5500-5600rpm was the best shift point for me.
one thing the dyno will show you though is where the power comes on and drops off, so if your making 100hp at 4000rpm and 120hp at 4800rpm then 90hp at 5500rpm then that tells you you need to shift at about 5000rpm as the power lower in the revs is more than the power higher in the revs in the previous gear .... if you get me ....
