No neons are legal (unless you are displaying your car) to answer in short!
All those LEDs and neons in parcel shelves etc are illegal to have on while you drive...

Were they parked when the police spoke to them?
It's that common now I think most police probably don't mind much!
If your neons are out of sight in the car - just giving off a glow you shouldn't have any problems. If you read all the writing on those neon packets , most will say something along the lines of 'check the laws in your state or territory regarding legality, intended only as a static display'

Don't see why'd you'd want external neons on when you're driving anyway, besides the wank factor and the extra 5kw of power..

Is your brothers girlfriend good looking? that may be why! :)

As far as I know - they are totally illegal.

Something to do with red lights at the back and white at the front, don't want odd colours coming from all parts of the car confusing motorists.

Cheers

I agree, not sure you are stating that it would need another 5kW to power them or there presence would add another 5kW of visual power to the car. Guessing you would need about 50W to run a few neons.

No. As a static display, do what you want. On the street, it's cop bait.

No lights that can be confused with emergency vehicles (Red/Blue/Yellow [traffic direction thing's]) can be used inside [and none at all outside] for QLD I think.

In saying that.

I have an incredibly bright HU (it's chrome so i bought it since it suits the amoutn of chrome on our old torries, but didn't realise it was so bright till I bought it) even on the lowest setting, it lights up half my interior, so I threw in blue neons in the footwell to even it up a few years ago, then got annoyed that the backseat was half lit up by the HU, so I changed the interior light on the roof to Blue LED's and pointed them it at the back seat.
The end result is my interior completely lights up with a tinge of blue at night when it's all on.

No cop has ever cared.
I have them rigged up to my instrument dimmer switch, so I can adjust the 'mood lighting' :)

My understanding of Vic laws is that Neons are only allowed to be on when the car is STATIONARY. but if you really want to know, go and look through the PDFs one the Vic Roads website.

Ive driven a car that had blue interior neons (not my car, and not a torry!) And its real shit to drive. The windscreen gets real glary and near impossible to see through any tinted windows because of reflection... all you see is yourself... not the road.

The price some people pay to look 'cool', they sacrifice actually being able to SEE...

You can be booked in any state for having the inside light on while the vehicle is in motion.
Glare on windscreen etc.
"I was just reading the map" is not an excuse.

Grant..
