Ok, post this up as a reply from the owners brother, who has had alot of input helping to re-build the car to what it is today.
What a bunch of wankers on that torana forum........
Of course the wheels are not factory, they are 17inch boyd billets, big deal.... The 14in originals are in the shed, the spare still has the original factory fitted tyre on it although perished quite a bit now.
As for the diff/brakes, it is a salisbury diff with discs, as for factory fitment I have no idea and dont really care either. If it ever breaks, it will probably get a 9inch FORD diff.
Wrong bolts, again who cares, this car has been modified in many ways and if it aint original well thats too bad, The original bolts were siezed and cut off, these bolts look good on it.
The interior has been re-trimmed with seats from another hatch, and done in colors that the owner likes, the original seats are stored in the shed and are a bit shabby. They were kept as the original material which was unique is not available.
Yes its been re-sprayed, you shouldve seen it before it was re-done, stone chips and minor dints everywhere.
It could fry those back tyres without any problems whatsoever, it has a much modified black block 308 which looks original, right down to the factory stickers everywhere.
It runs a T10 g/box and it was fitted by the owner after the M21 spat its guts. When this car was first purchased 20 years ago, someone had fitted a traumatic to it because the previous owner was a cripple.
He has all the paperwork from GMH verifying its authenticity, we dont need to send some stranger an ID number, who knows what he could do with that. Also have the original paperwork/receipts which was supplied when the car was first purchased from the dealer, citing factory aircon. If you had the money, you could buy anything you wanted, you just had to tick the boxes.
This car was not one of the best examples in the first place, restoring the car to original spec was gunna cost alot, and it'd still look like every other torana - boring as bat-shit. Ever thought that some owners dont care what the purists think?
I doubt it will show up at the drags, you guys are just too anal about this stuff, its only a bloody car, get over it and get a life.[end quote]

1 It's a car forum, specifically Toranas, we are here to talk about cars. The person who made the comment about the wheels was obviously being sarcastic, it was a joke.
2. Theres nothing wrong with modifying a car to suit your tastes, in the case of a car like this, they are worth more original, but easily reversed items like bolts and wheels are nothing. I'd say the ones on the bonnet would require a new bonnet if you wanted to fit the original screws now. No one cares if it's been resprayed, most have, mine has.
3. The issue with the diff is the brakes are on the back, on an A9X they are on the front, it's naturally attracted some attention, and as I said, it's a car forum.
4. As for sending me the PSN, what could I do with it exactly? I can't work out where the owner lives from it or anything, all I can do is verify the car. Some people don't like to give out that info, and thats fine it's their car, but I really can't do anything bad with it, but I could tell you any options it really did have. GMH don't verify A9X's, and have not for some time, at least 12 -13 years, so any paperwork must have come from them before then, and really, all they could ever do was go off numbers you supply them, they never came and checked a car out to see if it was genuine. Anyway, I still maintain, no road going production A9X left the FACTORY with airconditioning, no matter how much money you had, they didn't have a list of options you could tick off, they all came to the dealers the same way. Any mods like T10's, aircon, sun roof, radio etc was done by the dealer. As I said earlier, the dealer may have fitted the factory aircon system, but it never left the factory that way.
As a footnote, yes, we can be anal and picky, but it doesn't mean we are right when it comes to tastes. I might not like the wheels for instance (as an example) but thats not the point, you do your car your way, but talking about whats original and whats not does not make the forum members wankers in my opinion.

well that answers the question then doesn't it, it can't be factory fitted a/c then , thank you REDA9X , I will enjoy telling him that he is wrong about it. The confirmation letter form GMH that the owner has is 20 yrs old , so I assume it to be correct.don't worry about the PSN, I just checked every black hatch, not one of them came from the factory with factory air.

I am now. I'll introduce myself properly in the new members section if I can find it.he has been following this thread even though he is not a member of this forum
Ok guys, you are probably right, I shot my mouth off a bit and you probably dont deserve it. Abuse me if you want to, but its just water off a ducks back.

I did have alot to do with the rebuilding of that torana, and I also know most of its history. It was not a really nice car when he first got it, and certainly was NOT anywhere near original either, we've been trying to re-build it closer to A9X spec than it ever was.
It was fitted with a traumatic gearbox by the previous owner although the build plate says M21, so right from the start we knew he had something that was played around with. We sought the help of GMH regarding the numbers, and they verified the cars authenticity. That was around 1985/86 from memory, so we do know that it is the genuine article.
The original purchase receipt and owners manual specs aircon as factory fitted, if it was dealer fitted then they have done a very good job indeed. Even the wiring harness has the switches etc for the aircon in place, and everything else is spot on as far as I can tell. As for the front X member, it was replaced many years ago as it was easier to re-build another f/end than it was to re-do the original as the engine was out of it anyway, so I have no idea about the additional bracket, and I doubt if he still has the other X-member as he's moved house several times in the last 10 years and alot of stuff got chucked.
Anyone got any idea on how many toranas did actually have aircon fitted?
The diff thats in it was in the car when purchased, if the calipers are in the wrong place then I have no idea why. remember this was bought 20 years ago. If anyone has an explanation then Im open to hear it. I have a theory, but I'll let you guys speculate first.
As for the build numbers, if you have records I guess thats your good luck, but knowing my brother you'll never get them and I dont blame him one bit. He's very protective of it after we caught some assholes trying to steal it one night. They had pushed it down the road about 100m when we came around the corner, 3 car loads of us, and they copped a real flogging too.
Anyway, if you want to know more just ask, but I wont reveal its location, suffice to say he's in Vic somewhere.

secret is one thing, but a simple VIN shows proof and it's not giving anything away.
