It sheared the harmonic balancer key, After trying for ages to get the broken bit of key out, I realised it also locates the timing gear and it was never going to come out, I was desperate to get back out, the car had felt great, and my 2 mates who race were there , so I pushed it back on, tightened it as far as I could, crossed my fingers and went out for 1 more flying lap - I broke my PB on this lap now 1.56.1 previously 1.56.8, Karl also broke his PB on the same lap, and better still I passed the XY under brakes going into turn 4 !!!!
I came in, tightened the bolt again and did this 2 more times before the day was over.
Out of 85 cars, I came 16th. All in all not a bad day although I've got some work ahead of me.

Not sure about the crank.
There is a couple of things about this motor that suggest it was used in a boat at some stage. Boats usually drive off the front of the crank, so it's a possibility (clutching at straws here)that the front of the crank has some tiny amount of wear which contributed to the problem.
I might just change the key, and fit a new balancer using the appropriate locktight and take it to the drag day and see what happens.

If I have to change the crank, it will mean rebalancing, grinding the crank and new bearings as a minimum,
I probably should change rod bolts and valve springs,
I could easily cope with more comp and a bigger cam .......... I think this is known as the snowball effect !

No - the crank is stuffed !
With the timing gear off, there is a noticeable lip between where the balancer goes and where the gear goes.

But hey - it was fun while it lasted !!

Well it won't be fixed properly for the drag day, but I might put it back together with some loctite on the balancer and hope for the best. I got the broken key out which wasn't easy.

It ran well at the drag day, no problems all day, didn't keep track of how many runs I did, but I think it was about 10. Best time was 13.6 which was .2 slower than last time 2 years ago.

I set my best time with my girlfriend in the car, the extra weight must have helped with traction - although I'm not sure I should have told her that....

Two video clips from Heathcote. My Commodore racing Heath and Matt.

When is your next circuit day Mick?

I'm waiting for you to get your extractors built and then come to Phillip Island for a sprint.

Although I need to get the motor out and fix the crank and at the moment I've got too many other jobs on the go to even start that so not really sure when it will be.

Fired up the racecar yesterday and drove it outside for a wash. I remembered I'd never got around to uploading any video of the lap when I passed Karls XY. Unfortunatley my camera wasn't going but this is the view from inside my mate Marks VN (V6 ex Saloon car)

You must have been very busy if it took 18 months to change the crank. Or there was other things changed too.

I went to Sandown today for the Shannons Nationals, it was the last occasion Commodore Cup will run as a national series, hopefully they will revive it as a state series, anyway, I bought some good used tyres that were fresh off the car and shouls have more grip than the ones currently on the car which have been there since about 2009.....
