Hi Jdjl James, it would be great if you could do a write-up on how you fix these parts. Us members on a budget could use some tips on how it's done. I realise you'll be worried about loosing business but we're all here to help each other. If we do it ourselves it won't look as good as yours but we can be proud with what we have achieved. Love to see some pics of tools you use and what finish you ask for at the platers. Thanks. Marty
Not too hard, just have to tap out the dents with similar profile dolly's and polish them as you would any type of aluminium (providing the anodizing is stripped off). You just have to practice enough to be good at it.

I,ve had vinnies in Dandenong restore my LJ front and rear light surrounds , they came back looking like new
it cost twice the price of what rares are considering for the new ones though

The enquiries that I've made into getting them re anodized cost more than the Rare Spares price for a complete item, I know they would get a better price due to high quantities but even so ???????.
I can spend the best part of a weekend doing a set from start to finish, if I was to charge by the hour you wouldn't want to pay that much. Then if you add the purchase price, paint stripper, a pile of sandpaper, paint and a bucket load of elbow grease plus experience my customers are getting an absolute bargain for an item that looks like it's brand new. To be honest I'd make better money doing my day job, but this is just something I can go to the shed to do when it suits me and helps pay for the parts I need for my Torana with no questions asked.
I'm all for helping each other out but trust me you're better off doing some OT at work and buying some already done. Or do some research and just have a go, that's how I started.
STEPS: Clean, strip paint, tap tap,tap........... massage...........,test fit, rub, rub,rub,rub..........,mask up, paint, sand, paint, sand.........
Cheers James

thought anodizing was cheap as chips,is it because the surrounds(front &rear) are rather fragile that they would get knocked around through the anodizing process,so rare spares are still considering makin lc lj rear surrounds?

If you need some have a look at my thread in "parts for sale" - "Restored Lj headlight surrounds". I can sell you a set outright or repair your existing ones. Prices may vary with each set, depending on what repairs have been made. I've got 5 sets of taillight surrounds waiting for me to repair, I'll let people know when I've got some ready.
James
And for what i have seen he does a great job
cheers gong

Are rare spares doing taillight surrounds aswell or just headlight surrounds? If anyone gets a set of these I'd like to know what you think of them so I know if I should keep restoring original ones or not.
James
just the front ones atm,be interesting to see how they come out,

I bought a set of reproduction lj headlight suurounds off ebay about 12 months ago, they finally arrived last week. Was a little bit disappointed in the finish, the guy said they couldnt get 100% quality but i was hoping it would be close, they have 1 or 2 really small dints and scratchs on them. I paid 175 deliverd
. didnt know someone else was having a go at it apart from rares
12 month wait seems wierd.what did he say about the delay pete.

Probably the same piles of junk i brought off that wanker Phillsonlinerotary's, he should stick to rotors.
Theres a thread on them,
I was absolutely disgusted by the product, so much so i even had old mate Phill on the phone.
I notice he and someone else are sellign them again, I will be holding off untill Rares makes theres though.
Cheers.
