Today ive been modding my instruments to use the Commodore workings.
got the speedo and fuel gauge done (fuel gauge will work backwards. left = full)
Should get the tacho done tomorrow, then i'll post pics.

Does anyone have experience modding the electronics in a VDO tach?
The IC is an ITT 3003-393, but i cant find any info on it.

What are you actually trying to do, I had to make a small amp circuit with a gain of 150 in mine to make the Tacho pickup from 50mV signal from the DIS module as that was the only signal which gave the correct frequency for my engine using 4 coils on 8 cylinder but that just sat between my DIS module and Tacho.

Probably different to what you are trying to do.

i want to make the tac signal from the igniter (2 pulse/rev) drive the VS tacho.
im sure it would be quite easy to do, if i had some info on the chip.
probably just change a resistor and bridging wire or two.
ive seen instructions on how to make it work with an ls1.
VDO would just have a basic circuit that can be configered to whatever they needed.

ive had it hooked up, and the needle moves with the engine revs ok. but at 2/3 the rate.
the vs only has a 120 degree dial, i'd like 270

G'Day sprog, I took my dash to a place called M.I.S he does all out instrument repairs for work, he converted and upgraded my dash so it look all original cost me around $300 when I restored the hatch. They are at Kings Park (blacktown) Contact Ron. If you need the phone number let me know.

When I presented my car to the engineer here he was not at all concerned it was carb'd. Perhaps our rules are different from yours? I had heard it would need to have cats and injection but I fronted it anyway just to see if it would pass and it did. :buttrock: It's all legal now and that's all that matters. :3gears:

Sorry I did not get back to you on the pipes... I wasn't following this thread. I made mine at work and they are tuned length 4 into 1 stepped from 1 5/8" to 1 3/4" with merge collectors and a 3" X pipe. After the X pipe I ran a twin 2 1/2" system with 5" Supertrapp mufflers. It's well under legal limits and sounds great. Your 1/1/2 pipes will definitely not be too large. Mine pulls like a 15yo schoolboy with a penthouse right from idle. Cams in these things are tiny and it's all over at 5500rpm. 227 degrees adv and 182 degrees at .050" and .315" lift. I'm about to order a set from Kelford in NZ that will let another 90 hp out of my engine with an extra 1200rpm at the top. The set I'm buying drop in onto the standard valve springs so just need to be re shimmed.

Cats are 2.5in magnaflows. euro 4 spec.

Toryoda:
Thanks for the info. do you have a pic or sketch of how you ran the pipes?
i'm still looking for ideas to get the drivers side to be equal length. the steering shaft makes it a tight space.
how much are the cams costing you?

I'll change them over for 4" ones at some point, so they'll fill the openings better.
Should look more like the one on the right.

Kelford Cams in NZ have a good range of choices advertised on their site for $1341/set. They were affected by the earthquake there and I'm having difficulty getting a reply from them. I'm ready to buy a set and all I need is a reply with an invoice. :dontknow:

No pictures of the headers sorry, just not enough space to get any to show worthwhile detail. You will need to run the rear pipe into the wheel arch, then down and below the outside of the crossmember and back underneath on the LH/X...... This is how I do them at work. I do the same both sides simply so they look similar. Be sure to turn your steering to full lock so you fabricate to miss the tyre! On my LJ I ran both rear pipes outside and below the crossmember just to make it easier on both sides. Be grateful you do not also need to negotiate your way around the starter as is required on a chev!!! Equal length is not as critical as many believe. The difference of a few inches is only a matter of a few HP but in Pro Racing it can make all the difference and it is these guys who want/need all they can get.

Here is a link to Kelford..... http://www.camshafts..._id=68&vmcchk=1 If you have any luck contacting them please let me know. The 207A is the grind I have chosen for mine. These will produce a significant HP increase with minimal cost and effort.
