Hello, not sure if I'm posting this in the right section but it seems right so:

What is the difference between XU-1's and GTR's? I'm looking into trying to get a shell in the future (within this or next year) and was just wondering that question. Also, what to look for when trying to find a shell? Can GTR shells be restored to XU-1 or would that be innacurate? (Would like to do an as original as possible restoration).

Cheers,
Troy.

Hi Troy.

There are quite a few differences between the GTR & XU1, basically the XU1 is an optioned up GTR that share the same shell appart from a few minor alterations
that indicate that it left the factory is one or the other.

If you are wanting to buy a shell build a mock up you may find it far cheaper to buy a standard 2 door and weld in the front guard flutes ( these are readily available from Rare Spares )
and you will will then have a shell that looks like a GTR or XU1

hope this is a starting point for you

cheers
L

Might also be worth getting in touch with your local Torana or car club as they have the resources to authenticate cars & shells for you. Also a great way to meet other owners or potential sellers

cheers,
Mick

I see your from Brisbane torry nut, i spent a fair bit of town down there now-a-days. I'd rather take the years and dollars and do an original. Don't s'pose you can list some of the differences between the GTR and XU-1 in the shells that indicate which?

Thanks, I'll get in touch with some clubs.

I find it a strange request , I know the difference but wont share them with you...
already 3 xu-1 owners have "hit" this thread and told you nothing..

sounds to me like your fishing for info to put some dodgy tags onto a "S" body..got tags but no car/shell???(plenty on ebay now)
did ya buy those tags off ebay???? good chance they would be posted here on the "dodgy tag thread"
Go down to coffs and buy a REAL one and spend your money that way...
cheers johnno

Thats a false accusation. I'm here to learn! What are tags, like..the ID plate things? And at the moment I am organising with a friend to go down to Coffs and have PM'd the owner.

Cheers,
Troy.

Mop, 'tags' are a touchy subject when it comes to purists; as 'retagging' is a big issue apparantly (just happens to be one I'm not really concerned about)

Tags are the I.D. plates. On a Torana there are three, and a stamped number in the bodywork of the engine bay. Take BATHURST-32D up on his offer and you will learn a lot :)

So he's not some Pedo? Lol, I'll definetly take him up on the offer then. Thank you guys. Btw all I know about tags is that 82911 means GTR :S (is that right?)

Time to try and get in contact with him.

PS: A friend is doing up an LX (Not a 5k) into a drag/show car. Should be around 500-550hp when finished, sounds like a beast!

Its a bit sad that someone so young doesn't know how to tell the difference between a GTR and a XU-1 or even what the tags are but knows what a pedophile is and presumeably does.

Thank you, still hoping someone will answer it and still hoping (praying!) that John will give me a lesson on XU-1's in Coffs harbour.

That's exactly the thing, there's only a handful of tiny differences...
