Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can purchase the rubber strip that sits in the glass lifter channel assembly? I've had a look at the Rare Spares website but can't seem to find it.

Thanks in advance.

On the bottom of the glass? I would just fill it with Sikaflex and wind the window up.

Yes, on the bottom of the glass.

Didn't really think about Sikaflex, could well be an option if I can't source the rubber strip.

Cheers.

I reckon you could make one from insertion rubber or something.
I'd be interested to know if you can get the original replacement though.
Have you tried Rares or any other rubber suppliers/shops?

I've had a look on the Rare Spares website but with no luck.

I'd prefer to use the rubber strip. Don't know whether Clark Rubber would be worth a shot?. Maybe a local glazier?

You could try Betta Auto Rubbers on the Gold Coast. 1800 674 483. I've used his door rubbers and window strips and they seem to be ok.

Sounds like you're refering to weather strips, am I wrong? The ones that sit along the bottom of the window opening, visible from outside the car?
If so, that's not what Antelope is after. He's looking for the ones on the bottom of the window glass, that sits between the glass and the winder mounting chanel.

Nah I think he might mean in the galvinized lifter arm thing (where the roller roll along) and how the glass squeezes into there. Maybe I'm wrong

I also didn't think that something like that would ever wear out lol

I think you are chasing bailey channel rubber by the sounds of it
The bottom where the glass sits in is still called the bailey channel (pls correct me if i'm wrong)
Cheers D

Bailey channel is what the glass slides along at the front and rear of the door.

That's the bit I'm talking about.
It wouldn't neccessarily "wear out" so much as deteriorate. Although I have seen glass pull out of these in a couple early Toyotas.

I think he is after the rubber channel that secures the glass into the metal lifter channel. :D

Massive thread revival!

One of my front windows on the LX (passenger side) has separated from the rubber that sits in the metal lifter channel. It's been threatening to come loose for the last couple of years and finally popped out. The rubber has deteriorated, with one section broken off... but overall, is still fairly supple and useable.

I assume that no one ever found a replacement?

I'm wondering if I'm just best to put it all back together as-is with some sikaflex in place to hopefully help it hold on. I can't see any sign of a factory adhesive, so assume these were just a really tight fit when originally done by the factory?

Maybe it was originally glass setting tape, although that does look like a proper rubber strip. You could always use a Sika product but it would be difficult to remove if you ever wanted to.

Hi Brett. I replaced my 2 side windows as they were quite scratched.  They supplied me with the tape and I'm pretty sure they called it setting tape.  Glass for Classics is where I got it but possibly common amongst auto glaziers. Cheers Ron

Hey Ron,

You're a gem!

Firstly - here's another photo, showing the end profile of my original rubber:

From looking on the website of Glass for Classics, it seems they do away with the rubber and replace it with that setting tape.... interesting to see they offer different thicknesses too - likely what I'll need to resolve my problem.... this video has answered all my questions

Thanks mate!

PS. Would love to install all brand new glass in mine one day - but damn it's not cheap!!

Cheers,

Brett.

Haha, not at all Paul.  It was your comments that prompted my memory.

Yes Brett not cheap. Sadly after getting the rear quarters for the hatch buffed I wasn't happy and had to replace them as well.  They are not cheap.  About to get windows tinted and should have done it before they were installed in the car. Good luck with it.  Cheers Ron

Paul, many thanks for raising the idea of the setting tape too - you're definitely not invisible mate!! My gratitude towards Ron was more about the lead to a company where I can actually buy some! No more guess work. I completely agree with you too - I was about to dig out the Sikaflex yesterday - something which I may have ended up regretting. Now that I know about this setting tape, I'll pick some up and give that a try first.

I'll call around a few Melbourne based places today and see what I can find.

Hey Ron - it's definitely a good idea to have the glass tinted when out of the car, that's how I did all mine originally. Having said that - a good tinter wont struggle with glass installed anyway.

Hi Guy's,

you can buy those rubbers / tape from Vehglass in Queensland.

It comes in a roll.

Regards Mando.

Vehglass is in Campbellfield, Vic? They don't have it.

Glass 4 Classics in Qld do have it. They recommended 2mm thick for a Torana.

I picked up a bunch for Brett (LXCHEV) and myself that should be good yesterday, and I'll have much more I need... probably have enough for a full sedan worth of glass when I'm done with it in a few days if anyone else is looking to put new glass in their car.
