Just received a free copy of the latest Motor Magazine, August 2009 edition.

I don't usually read it but it has an interesting article that I though I'd share. They have rated the top 10 Aussie Muscle Cars.

Six Holdens made the top 10 which is a pretty good result but did they get the top 10 right?

Anyway, here's the list.

Mick.

1. 2008 FPV F6

2. 1977 Holden Torana A9X

3. 1985 HDT VK SS Group A

4. 1971 XY Falcon GT HO

5. 1967 XR Falcon GT

6. 1988 HSV VL Group A

7. 1969 Holden HT Monaro 350

8. 1972 Holden Torana GTR XU-1

9. 2008 HSV W427

10. 1972 VH Charger E49.

I know rating cars can be a controversial issue.

They didn't say how they rated the various cars but give a little story on each car.

Don't agree with the FPV F6 but they justify it because "it runs the greatest ever Australian engine, full stop"

So they are saying this car got in because engine/performance, not based on racing pedigree, not on looks.

I think the other 9 cars deserve to be there but I would re-shuffle the order to my liking.

^^^^^ Now you're talking ^^^^^

and having had a few minutes to think about the list, I would remove the FPV and the XR GT (if I had a say in it),

the add the L34 and the HK 327 Monaro.

So can't a 6cyl ever be classed as muscle, even if it has more grunt and goes faster than the 8cyl ?

The F6 would be faster than most (if not all of them) in a straight line, stop better, and handle better. Possibly the 2008 HSV W427 could shade it, but in my experience the rest wouldn't get close to it.

Is it a muscle car? Maybe not right now, but in 20 years from now I think it will definitely be considered one. Fantastic car and we should be happy that an Aussie manufacturer, even if it is Fraud, will still build a car like this in 2009 with all the doomsday tree hugging global warming naysayers chopping at them.

What do I think is the best car on the list - the E49 for sure. Triple Webbers on a car you could buy from a dealer. Now that's cool, but its an emotional choice and not one based on performance capabilities although those things go like stink until you get to a corner. When you quickly find out why they chose the F6!!

So now 6 clyinders and Turbo cars can't be muscle cars ? so does that mean my rice burning nissan engine is out then ..........

So what would be the definition of a "Muscle Car" then if nothing to do with Power ?

Oh, Older 6cyls are ok, they are N/A... Actually, more i think of it.... A Muscle car should have a Carby...

MT, I'm talking factory muscle cars.... If your car came like it is, from the factory... Then I wouldn't class it as a Muscle Car.... Just like a VL Turbo isnt a Muscle car

Just remember the term "muscle cars" means different things to different people (and different countries).

Most people identify it with 1960's and 1970's, V8 motors and racing heritage but it really depends on the individual.

So lets just respect other peoples opinions, you don't have to agree with it or like it.

Don't want to see this thread closed early, some good discussion and opinions is healthy.

Mick.

Mick, thanks for concern bud..... i do know he was stirring the pot, it was made clear with the :tease: that got used.

Just to confirm i "was" having a laugh back, taking p1ss outa myself ..." rice burning nissan".

sorry thought that was clear (obviously not) :Buddy:

anyway moving on.....

This was a "real" question tho (everyone can answer)

So what would be the definition of a "Muscle Car" then if nothing to do with Power ?

so in other words ignoring the engine HP alltogether, what makes a car a mucle car or not ?

I agree with what Mick is saying, and while I think that a top ten list is a novel approach, I don't believe that the "top ten" should be rated 1 - 10.

All of those cars, and the models that MRLXSS pointed out, do have their own relevance in our "Muscle Car" history.

I also believe that to include any model from this decade, is a little premature and only time will tell if the likes of the W427 and the F6, are indeed muscle cars.

cheers
Mick

So are you saying a muscle car needs to be at least 10 years old, or that it is more about what the car gets used for over 10 years (racing etc) that qualifies it as Muscle, rather than just the car itself ?

I would have thought you could still have brand new muscle cars today, im sure a SLR or a A9X etc as a brand new car would still have been called muscle when brand new, so why can't new cars of present day be called a muscle car if used in racing etc ?

I still luv ya Mum(staxi) :spoton:

Ha-ha !

 back at ya bud !
