The Top Aussie muscle cars ever are the won thats got banned i say LOL
No.1 The 1972 V8 LJ XU-1 160mph plus from the factory
No.2 The 1972 V8 XA GTHO Phase 4,with its 400 H.P 351 V8
NO.3 The 1972 V8 E55 R/T Charger,340 V8,4 speed
And the only thing that has come close to them is the 2008 HSV W427 Dore
So for me they are the Cars, that i have listed above,But a 1977 LX A9X Hatch could sneak on the list Due to its Two Awesome Bathurst Wins in 1978,1979.
The Supercar Scare put us backwards in Beasty Cars untill the 2008 HSV W427,yet our Stupid Goverment Bans the Home Grown 1972 beasty's,but you could buy a Ferrari or Lambo in 1972 if you had the Loot to get one, what a Joke.
Just a few points with the Chargers, I had an E38 up till a couple of years back. It had an E49 cam and a 4 speed (the two essential differences to the E49, other than the rear shocks), and to be honest, it was awesome in a straight line, but was wanting in handling and brakes, certainly in comparison with the Torana. That doesn't take away from it as a great muscle car, but I believe the myth around the E49 has outgrown the reality to an extent. It wasn't all that successful as a race car, other than some short track success in NZ under rules that differed from ours in Oz.
Also, Chrysler ditched the idea of a 340 V8 powered 4 speed Charger in 1970. They committed to the webered Hemi as far back as then during testing of the mule utes, and the E55 Charger was never going to have a 4 speed behind it, despite the rumours and speculation of the press at the time. There is masses of documentation to prove this, along with John Ellis stating it repeatedly over the years. having said that, if they could have made it handle, an E55 with a 4 speed would have been a good thing, but I still don't believe it would have outdone a V8 XU1.
