So are you saying a muscle car needs to be at least 10 years old, or that it is more about what the car gets used for over 10 years (racing etc) that qualifies it as Muscle, rather than just the car itself ?

I would have thought you could still have brand new muscle cars today, im sure a SLR or a A9X etc as a brand new car would still have been called muscle when brand new, so why can't new cars of present day be called a muscle car if used in racing etc ?

MT

I am not saying that a muscle car needs to be at least 10 years old, but I would like to see what people, in 30 years time, class as a muscle car from this era.

I think that comparing muscle cars of the 60's and 70's to those of 2008, etc is a little unfair. We all know that the differences in technology far outweigh the brute hp of yesteryear. As far as were Toranas ever branded as muscle cars in there day, I am not too sure if any were in their initial road tests. If my mind serves me correct, maybe the A9X was given that tag on release.

As a point of interest, what current cars, since group A, are racing??

cheers
Mick

The F6 would be faster than most (if not all of them) in a straight line, stop better, and handle better. Possibly the 2008 HSV W427 could shade it, but in my experience the rest wouldn't get close to it.

Is it a muscle car? Maybe not right now, but in 20 years from now I think it will definitely be considered one. Fantastic car and we should be happy that an Aussie manufacturer, even if it is Fraud, will still build a car like this in 2009 with all the doomsday tree hugging global warming naysayers chopping at them.

LOL!! So because it out performs the real muscle cars that makes it a muscle car? A brand new camry does 14.7 sec quarter mile and has 268hp which is about the same as an A9X and I'm sure it out brakes and out handles them hands down too. So is that a muscle car? It's australian made and it's a six just like the phoon so by your scale it is!!

Sure the F6 is faster than the 30+ year old muscle cars, but put it up against some foreign cars of the same vintage and watch it get mauled in every department...

Oh, Older 6cyls are ok, they are N/A... Actually, more i think of it.... A Muscle car should have a Carby...

MT, I'm talking factory muscle cars.... If your car came like it is, from the factory... Then I wouldn't class it as a Muscle Car.... Just like a VL Turbo isnt a Muscle car

So people missed my other comment....

It amazes me that the F6 is at the top considering that most of these spend alot of time in a workshop because they are renoune for just shutting down on the open road with electrical problems,Working for at a Ford dealership(that I'm not proud of, but its my job)I have lost count of how many I have seen coming back in to work on a tilt tray. Then the owner getting the shits and because it becomes a regular occurrence and then they turn to us to buy the car back off them and they spew at the offer sometime 15 to 20k under what they purchased the car for, depending on year and ks its done.
I know every car has its problems from factory, but No1 for F6 DON'T THINK SO in my opion.

Just received a free copy of the latest Motor Magazine, August 2009 edition.

I don't usually read it but it has an interesting article that I though I'd share. They have rated the top 10 Aussie Muscle Cars.

Six Holdens made the top 10 which is a pretty good result but did they get the top 10 right?

Anyway, here's the list.

Mick.

1. 2008 FPV F6

2. 1977 Holden Torana A9X

3. 1985 HDT VK SS Group A

4. 1971 XY Falcon GT HO

5. 1967 XR Falcon GT

6. 1988 HSV VL Group A

7. 1969 Holden HT Monaro 350

8. 1972 Holden Torana GTR XU-1

9. 2008 HSV W427

10. 1972 VH Charger E49.

I haven't read it so i'll go lightly. But most of those cars are not "Muscle cars" by the original US definition. Valuable and collectable - yes. There is probably only two genuine (to the purist) muscle cars on the list - HT GTS350 (manual only) and XY GT-HO. Throw in the XU-1 (why 1972, not 1973?) and the E49 and you might have a few more.
The two Group A's belong in another era, as do the W427 and F6 in a later era again. Time will judge the F6 for what it is (i'm guessing junk in 20 years).
XR GT - special car but not a muscle car.
And A9X, very very special car but not a true muscle car (just like an XC Bathurst spec Cobra), different rules for different times, and more collectable than almost all Aussie cars anyway.
The cars that stick out as missing altogether are the LH L34, XW GT-HO phase II, LC XU-1 and VH E38. And possibly an XA RPO83.

AASA Australian Touring Car Championship - highly competitive racing with fields containing V8 Giants (V8-powered sedans from all major manufacturers, with older 5 litre V8 Supercar specification cars, 4-litre, quad-cam cars, all the way up to 7-litre pushrod engines, plus the newly introduced 3-litre turbo "Giant Killer" class.

AASA Production Car Championship - any street legal sedan, fitted with roll-over protection, fire extinguisher and racing seat belt is eligible.

Don't know a lot about it im afraid, but under the impression just about "anything" can, and is being raced (inc current cars) within such classes as above, some of the guys on here that have race cars will be able to confirm what cars are seen racing.

And by your rule any average handling car with poor brakes and a V8 engine is a muscle car? Ha ha.

But I completely understand where you're coming from and each to their own with a definition of a muscle car. As I said, the E49 is my choice and I've driven 6 of the 10 on that list, plus a few that didn't make it like the E38 & E55 Chargers and HQ 350 Monaro.

So what do YOU think is a muscle car? Obviously not something that does 14.7 sec quarters and has 268Hp Posted Image

Maybe its a car that has some heritage, but then a Mini Cooper has plenty of this and has only 4 cylinders. Is that a muscle car?

Muscle car = very hard thing to define.

I would replace the A9X with the L34 myself, if we're talking about cars that were on the road.

But F6 as no.1? No...

I agree about the Phase 3 being above the Toranas...Despite personal preference, the Phase 3 is a beast of a car...and you could drive one on the road...

That would be just about every Falcon GT and Monaro GTS produced in the late 60's early 70's eh?

The Top Aussie muscle cars ever are the won thats got banned i say LOL
No.1 The 1972 V8 LJ XU-1 160mph plus from the factory
No.2 The 1972 V8 XA GTHO Phase 4,with its 400 H.P 351 V8
NO.3 The 1972 V8 E55 R/T Charger,340 V8,4 speed

The Supercar Scare put us backwards in Beasty Cars untill the 2008 HSV W427,yet our Stupid Goverment Bans the Home Grown 1972 beasty's,but you could buy a Ferrari or Lambo in 1972 if you had the Loot to get one, what a Joke.

Yeah I agree. Regardless of what else is on the list, why would anyone put a 1972 XU-1 on any such list over a 1973? Just shows you how much credibility the article authors might really have.

I just read what they've wriiten. Waste of $8.95, don't bother. The article is about as credible as front page news. Examples:

500 x A9X's built, of which 95 were sedans.

LJ XU-1 scored over the LC XU-1 a bored out 186 and triple carbs.

The August 1969 HT GTS350 got revised suspension from the HK (it was identical to HK in suspension when it was released)

And those are just three things I know about, so I can only imagine the other BS in the words.

I'll write them a letter to the editor and see if they publish it!

The VH E55 is a virtual muscle car in it's own right, regardless of whether it was ever intended to run a 4spd. 340ci, 10.5:1 comp, steel crank. Pretty potent engine strangled by a straw for an exhaust just like Holden did to the HK and HT 307. I saw an old Wheels or Motor magazine from 1972/3 where they put an aftermarket exhaust on one and it trounced the E49 over the quarter which was the fastest 70's Aussie car over the quarter, even quicker than the PhaseII. The E55 with good exhaust pulled high 13's from memory.

A Muscle car shouldn't have power steering! You should need "muscles" to drive it!
