Im led to believe the silver one witch sat in the Birdwood museum for years was the original show car that was originally white then updated a few years later to silver to continue the Auto show circuit. Then a couple of years ago Holden gave it a birthday and restored it back to its original white paint scheme. It has been on back on show Birdwood and various other places since.

Was chatting to my brother and he reminded me that he sent some pics to me once of a gtr-x, I had forgotten. Not sure where they originated from, maybe this was when one was getting restored?

Any chance so one could go and have a look under the bonnet and tell us what the engine no is and see if there are any numbers stamped on the head?

I have an original Holden Torana GTR-X Engineering Report and I was going through and on page 8 there is a picture of engine taken from carby side if you have a copy of the book Spotlight on Holden Torana LJ-LJ you can see it on page 52 but the picture is not very clear. I will go and scan the picture from the engineering report and upload

I have scanned the image from the report and the images are 600dpi and 1200dpi, you can clearly see a 74 could be an LC GTR Head...

The report is printed on some sort of vinyl or plastic

There is some nice pics on the web of one painted in white, i assume these are old pics taken back when it was first coming out?

Then there seems to be that one was painted silver, and fitted with the mags. (maybe this is the same one)

Definitely on display at Holden at Fishermen's Bend. I was there last week... Bonnet is shut though... Pretty sure it was parked right next to the TT36 Torana.

Does anyone have any pics of the GTR-X when it was Silver?

I am trying to work out when they painted it from the original White to Silver.

I do know that it was restored to the original colour scheme in 2003.

cheers
Mick

The silver one with SLE UC wheels was at the Birdwood Museum when I saw it 10 years ago, think Holden's apprentices had freshened it up and possibly fitted later wheels then, but then again this could be where the SLE wheels originated as the GTR X rear discs were later used for the UC and a larger version was developed for the HZ Statesman and the A 9 X.

I have a Sports Car World from early 1984 that features a drive test on the GTR-X, along with photos, done by Peter Robinson. He actually drove it (along with some other of Holden's cars) in late 1983 as part of the 35th anniversary of the 48-215. It is silver with the UC wheels in the article. I get the impression that it was painted silver just prior to this 35th anniversary celebration. When I get home, I'll try and scan the article and post it.

That is one gorgeous car, even by todays design standards.

Personally it doesn't look like a Holden to me, it lacks muscle and more like something Japanese or from the UK.

I've always seen it as just one of those 'futuristic' prototypes that many car manufacturers did back in the 60's, back when they thought beyond year 2000 we'd all be wearing Ace Frehley type space suits and travelling to work via big transparent tubes.

I think if they thought it would sell it would've been put into production?

If you have a look at this thread there is an article from October 1978 that has it in silver. It gives the impression, although a bit unclear, that it must have been painted around then.

Thanks Robj

I have that Modern Motor mag here so I will dig it up and have a read.

it's definately looking like it was painted Silver around 1977/1978. It stands to reason that it was around this time as the UC SL/E was being released and it would have been the first time the alloys would have been seen on a Holden..

cheers
Mick

Well you are all wrong!!
There are actually 2 cars.
The white one is the original (as in first) car and is fitted with the 186X engine.
The silver car was an updated version and is fitted with a 202 engine.

Cheers,
JPXU1 :)
