Thres a few reasons y i want to do it and it definitly wont get rushed the reason i want to keep driving it is because its the only car ive ever had that was registered and it wouldnt be driven alot i really cant see it ever getting.built if i dont borrow money. if i buy a different car thos and my other torana would most likely sit and get sold.

Buy a cheap daily then.

You will never be able to do anything of any worth with the UC as your daily and project car, you'll only be rushing to get shit done, slapping it back together and generally not finishing things to the standard you want.

There will be people that will argue the point, but I'm of the firm belief you cant have an older car as a daily and a ful blown project car. (not to mention the rate of deteriation that a daily sees)

just my opinion buddy, take from it what you will.

I'm totally with Chris on this one...

Loans are a burden! And I can guarantee, you'll get a loan... Splash some cash on stuff you don't need and still have the car off the road but be negative 10k with the bank!

im considering taking out a $10000 loan to do some work on the red UC but im not sure where to start
i was thinking
-9" diff
hoppers brake kit
get a welder
get paint and primers
flare kit
wheels and tyres

not sure what else to do any suggestions?
going to the bank on wednesday to see if i can get it

This is where stuff starts to snowball and get out of control, and why I prefer doing things slowly and one by one...

- 9" diff - Have you thought about Brakes, Axles, Tail Shaft, Diff Centre, Ratio, LSD?
- hoppers brake kit - Brake Lines, Rear Brakes?
get paint and primers - Are you going to paint it yourself? How do you plan on doing it? Bit by bit? Or get someone else to do it? They might not paint it with the paint you buy and make you buy more paint, are you 100% set on the colour?
flare kit - Remember to factor in the cost of the fitting kit, as well as all the work involved it cutting the guards etc etc...
wheels and tyres - What stud pattern? HQ? Torana? Buying new wheels and tyres will set you back like 3k...Tyres are almost more expensive than the wheels these days!

I really dont see your point here man?

Its the only car you've ever had that was registered (is it unregoed at the moment though?)

Do you need a car to get to work (I'm assuming at 19 that you are out of school?)

You said a couple pages back that you are engaged, weddings are expensive.

You need to concentrate on where you are going and what you are doing. Pushing ahead with multiple ideas and no real plan other than "I'm doing it because if I dont it wont get done" is going to get you in a bind eventually.

How many toranas do you have? what is you actual plan? (i.e. daily one and spend cash fixing/modifying the other?)

If you arent in a position to save the cash to do the car, then how are you going to pay back the loan?

I may have you all wrong man, but from outside looking in, you have your priorities all ass about face.

I agree with the other guys Hawk and would not recommend taking out a loan to spend on your torana.

Buy a reliable & cheap daily driver and save a few dollars (which you'll need if you have moved out of home.)

Shit happens and most of us have been through similar situations.

Put the torry on the back burner and get the other stuff sorted out.

Hang in there,

Mick.

P.S. I'm 52 and had more ups and downs than a yo yo.

Ok to answer.some of the questions i have factored in pricing
there are some showheels on ebay that come with tires for 1200
For the 9 " i was going to stick with drums 3.08 lsd centre billet axles i know someone that had this done for 1500
Stick with torana pattern brake lines stay the same except where thae hoppers kit connects of course
as for paint and pannel my dad was a spray painter and a welder so should be ok in that area
i figured for a flare kit including mounting bolts and rubbers would be around 1000 and the car would stay flamenco red with black around the windows.

And orange first i dont need the car to get to work i can walk its not far at all and yes im engaged but a wedding would be a few years away easy we talked about 2015 or 16

also i have 2 toranas but only plan on building one that way as i go i could use spare panels while the good ones were getting painted i like driving the torana because its easy to work on it would stay a 202 auto and just be a nice streeter and daily

im currently on 600+ a week and could save 400 a week easily but im not good at saving and tend to waste my money at times so i thought having the payment taken out wen i get paid means definit loan payments and i can get what i wanted done alot faster

also i am always confused about what i want in life and things like that its the way ive always been and it frustrates me alot

I would agree with not going for a loan aswell. If you think it is a must i would go less than 10k and just take a little longer, even if the loan goes towards a newer daily and not your project.

Im 19 and only work 3-4 days a week for the past couple of years and ive managed to save 10k up. (i have 9k now i just blew 1k on a new computer). If you put your mind to it you can save money quite quickly. Talk to your bank see what gives you the best interest on your money im with netbank saver which works the best for me and i get alot of interest on that. All you need to do it stop going out so much, dont by stupid expensive things like most teenagers and just limit what you do for fun. Im not saying make your life a complete bore but ive saved my money easily and with little effort, im sure you could too.

The season for lawn mowing is over now but mowing some ones lawn is easy money and it isn't that hard. Try giving that a go in your spare time. 50 bucks a lawn can go a long way if its cash in hand

yeah i took out a loan when i was in hard times had a smashed up torana tha the other dickhead was not going to pay for due to corrupt police orificer (uncle of the assclown who hit me) and i was being hassled by the police for drivign a torry on my ps to a ridiculous point so i bought a daily probably the WORST thing i have done in my life once you add up how much you repay in interest and fees and what not it is ridiculous i spose its given me a good credit rating but shit ive paid for my lesson dont get loans for anything but a house also a 9 inch with billet axles for 1500 ummm doest sound right to me if you going to that extent you wouldn tput a dirty old set of diff gears and a shitty lsd in i thought i would get away with 500 bucks for my 9 inch but things get out of hand 2500 later its bullet proof now but god it hurt

also being on you ps i doubt the lil 6 will turn the 9 inch very well

You could probably even organise the bank to transfer a certain amount out of your wage each week to the savings account and thus guaranteed savings!! I dont daily my torana and even when its off the road for repairs etc I miss it and thats only like a month max. Whilst you might allocate a week to complete a modification, let me tell you somehow you are guaranteed for it to blow out. And whilst it might not be cool to drive a little runabout, you'll save on fuel and be able to take as long to modify your torana as neccessary!!

there are more than a few fun little cars out there as well ;)

If you have only ever driven the torana, you might be surprised how much fun you can have in a "daily" :D

Have you considered a Datsun 120Y as a daily? Cheap, simple, and you can really thrash those little go-karts. If I wasn't crippled by a mortgage I'd be looking at one for a daily or second project.

More than half my regular take-home goes straight to my mortgage. Then add bills, living expenses etc. You have a lot more spare cash then I do. Decide what your priorities are, then make a plan.

Well i think i need a torana daily as im probably picking up another uc soon had a look at it tonight its got no diff motor or box but the rest of the car is pretty good doors are clean and so are the guards and boot. the bonnet has a hole cut in it because it used to run a supercharged 307 chev. theres some rust in the boot and rear quarters and it has a fully rebuilt front end.

Find out soon whether or not ill buy it for $700

So soon ill have 3 uc's but undicided if this will be a parts car or a restorer

Hey Steve thought I might just throw in some of my thoughts reading through your recent goings on in your thread...

reckon you really need a third UC?

We rebuilt mine with half a parts car....I really didn't spend a huge amount of money to get my torrie to how it is today, It's amazing what you can repair and re-use if you put some time into it! It's also probably not a good idea to take on another UC as a potential project when it sounds like your finding it a bit difficult to get your red one on track. Put the money you didn't spend on that third UC into that savings account you opened up, because, that's what it's for yea? So you can eventually fix up your red UC!

As for the 9 inch....mate I wouldn't bother for the moment, maybe in the future when it's packing a bit more heat, but even then honestly mate, my UC has the same diff as yours, and if you can imagine all the abuse it would have copped from a P plater, even now ive got the 333 stroker infront of it and it still hasn't broken! Although on the wheel side of things, would I like to change stud pattern and get some cooler rims on it, sure! That would be ace! However all the money that'd go into what seems so simple would add up! So as cool as it would be I just put it on the back burner because since all the gear in my UC still works and looks ok, I'd be best to spend that money elsewhere or save it, once you blow it you'll never get it back. I'm not saying be a tight ass and don't spend another cent, because that's how we learn and that's exactly how I learn't what I know now, but within reason you've gotta keep ontop of things because this kinda gear can really get expensive and get you into trouble. As Ryan mentioned, there's so many hidden costs with diff setups, what might sound like an attractive price for a diff isn't really the bottom line.

Put my recent scenario into perspective. My clutch , gearbox, bellhousing and everything just shat itself and so we've just pulled the motor and box out....I had contemplated a supra 5 speed conversion for a few years now, and now seemed like the perfect time for it. However with my recent purchase of a WRX for my new daily and a few other things that have been leeching off my income, as awesome and as perfect an opportunity it would have been to start fitting up a supra box, It would really be a stretch at this stage when I can get it all running again with improvements to the previous setup for <$500 when a supra conversion realistically you wouldn't get much change out of $1500 if you spent money wisely. Realistically as tempting as some things are, think of what they will cost.......then double it, THEN say 'can I really afford it?'.

Anyway I'm stuffed and off to bed but hopefully you can take something out of that garble and apply it to your situation, your UC reminds my alot of mine and I hope you end up as content with it as I am mine!
Will be keen to see how it all pans out for you!
Cheers.

Thanks for the advice i tried to talk tge guy down on the other uc and he wouldnt budge so i passed on it.
And i have just put all those ideas aside and im hoping to have the car on the road in the next month.
Yesterday rexy dropped off some 14" hotwires for me with good tyres and im really happy with them. im hoping to get a permit on tge car this week and get the exhaust done next week. after that its only small things left to do.

Also does anyone know why a rear drum would lock up when braking?

Things i have done recently to the car are
-new carpet
-stock stereo back in
-new centre console
-replaced passengers front guard and had it sprayed
-brake pads
-wheels and tyres
-wired up the auto choke
- replaced washer jets

so getting there

is having the carbon cannister connected a RWC item?

Good job!

Mick (Mick74LH) was having some issues with rear drums locking up maybe he has a few pointers. The outer drum part may no longer be perfectly round and the drum could catch when applying brakes, that's one possibility.

Yea it came out of the factory with a charcoal canister so yea you'll need it for RWC, it's a bit of bs but just run a few lines and hook it up, take it out when your done if you like but it's defectable (like everything) if the 5-0 pull you over and notice it missing. Straight LPG = no canister ^_^.
