Went & picked my SL/R up from it's storage home at my old man's place on the Northern Beaches. Driving home along the Eastern distributor & M5 i've noticed a vibration from 100kph+. Any speed under that it's OK. It also happens when you nail it hard down low, i used the throttle to turn a tight u-turn on Warringah road & kept it going in second for around 20 metres up the road at around 5500rpm & it felt bad. Something feels loose in the drivetrain, but all components are new & even though my first thought was the unis, they are brand new GT HO spec so i wouldn't think they'd be the problem. I've checked all the mounts & bolts etc & everything seems OK. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be wrong? I'm only asking as i have a week to get the car ready & i'm not keen on racing it the way it is, for other's safety as well as mine. Last thing needed is for something to give way at 160kph down the quarter.

Have you had a look under the car yet? It sounds like something is loose to me... First thing i thought was Uni's as well... Whats your pinion angle like? If its up shit creek, it will still kill a uni...

Tailshaft all balanced up ok as well? Weight hasn't fallen off? In saying that... Doesn't feel like an unbalanced wheel? Don't know... Just throwing up ideas...

I'd be looking at diff pinion angle! You might have the unis fighting each other!

Did you only just put the unis in? The bloke that made my tailshaft said sometimes unis are stuffed from new which was the case withmine, other than that , wheels weights, tansmission mount ? I suppose the list goes on but it may pay to put it up on a hoist to be on the safe side. I remember my hatch last year had big vibration issues and it felt like my dash was going to fall out down the 1/4. Anyway mine was numerous things though, pinion angles, tailshaft and uni's but thats another story.

hahahaha all replying together.

Tiny will it be 7.30am again in the carpark?

Thanks for the replies. I'll check the unis, i've thrashed the rubber on the car but could they have gone that far out of balance just from a few skids? I don't feel the vibration in the steering, it's definately a drivetrain vibration. I thought pinion angle could be another possibility, i had to put a 10mm spacer between the trans mount & x-member as the back of the engine was almost touching the firewall, but if it was a pinion angle issue, wouldn't the vibration be constant at any speed? The other thing i forgot to mention is when cruising at say 70-80kph, i gas it & it, for lack of a better explanation, feels like it lifts the front but when backing off, it feels like the car sways a little, like it has a busted engine mount, though i know it doesn't. I know it's next to impossible to diagnose something like this without driving/inspecting the car but all i'm after is suggestions as where to possibly look for a problem. Thanks again everyone, your input is very much appreciated.

As far as a know yes!

I'll be speaking with John Henman tomorrow to confirm all!

I had a smilar vibration fault with the hq and the only way o fixed it was to stiffen up the shocks. I have koni adjustable though!

Which carpark are we to meet? A friend who wants to watch me race can't get there till around lunch, will this pose any problems? Thanks

Its the carpark where all the spectators go , instead of turning left at roundabout and heading towards the pits you turn right and you wont miss it

Perhaps the tyres have developed a flatspot from sitting for ages.

if it has low profile tyres? check the pressures. They can look O.K. and actually be near flat.

To answer the questions above:

I dont feel it is right for me to publicly say what has happened to the people who cant make it, I Appreciate being informed and I wish them all the best. I'm sure more information will come out as the correct time comes, and I'm sure we all wish those who were injured a speedy and full recovery.

FOOD: - John Henman of WSID last mentioned to me that Catering will be open on the day so you will be able to buy the standard WSID canteen Fare!
you CAN bring a BBQ or other food but we are NOT allowed to sell food to the racers/spectators etc.

Meeting Point: - AT THIS TIME (And i need to confirm this with john!) - We will meet in the SPECTATOR CAR PARK at 07:30 for me to hand-out the tickets to everyone to get in.
We will then proceed to the pits and scrutineers.

We WILL be having a start line briefing with the crew as before, This will help any first time racers ( I dont think we have any this time!?)

Racing will commence soon after 10:00.

SECURITY / SPECTATORS
Spectators must come to the COMPETITORS entrance to be allowed entry.
PLEASE HAVE YOUR SPECTATORS CONTACT YOU BEFORE THEY ARRIVE AND MEET THEM AT THE GATE TO ASSIST SECURITY. IF SPECTATORS DO NOT KNOW IT IS FOR A GMH-TORANA DRAG DAY, AND IT IS TINY (ROB) ORGANISING IT SECURITY WILL NOT LET THEM IN!!!!!!
This is IMPORTANT as we need to feel at least a bit secure that our gear is safe in the pits by not allowing just anyone through that gate.

Any Further questions, Please ask here!

Thanks for the info Tiny.

Im a first time drag racer, I normally like corners! :P

One last question is in regards to scrutineering.

The only issue I can remember from before was needing an overflow for the radiator?

Just trying to make sure we have all our bases covered.

Where do the spectators park? I'll have a trailer on my car with an engine in the back... Don't really want to be leaving that outside the track.

It looks like I have another mate or two keen to come up for a Road trip. One of my mates is so keen he wants to drive up himself! HAHA!

You dont need rego papers, how ever you will need an over-flow bottle, even a cable tied water bottle will keep em happy!

Might not make it now, can't figure out what the drivetrain vibration is & probably won't in time as i don't know anyone who'll hire me a hoist for an hour or two after work this week.

The main things they look for to ensure the car is raceworthy are:

All items secured (Especially battery Secured)
Throttle return spring working freely
For automatic cars - Starter lock-out working ( Only start in park or neutral)
Overflow - No fluids to leak on to the track - no oil leaks or water leaks - must have a coolant overflow bottle ( Coke bottle is OK).

Helmet as per the rules in the PDF on the first page

Seat belts working - 3 point belts or 4 point harness for S/St cars

Civil Driver's Licence or P plates ( L plates not allowed)

That's about all i can think of!

Cheers
