What does A9X stand for an SLR 5000 as ive always wondered

Sports Luxury Racing - 5000 ---> 308. I think there is another interpretation for the R as well.

A9X --> NFI, you'll need somebody else to answer that.

SLR5000 is a special vehicle package (option code XU2) based upon an LH and LX SL/R. Basically the same principle as a HZ Sandman (XX7/XU3) or a HQ GTS 4 door (XV4). Nothing special really, just a sports version of the standard car, much like an SS Commodore is today.

A9X is the option code for an homolgation vehicle package, but this time based only on (late) LX SLR5000 and SS hatchback. It was a homologation package to get suspension, diff and brake upgrades into race cars. Early form of the Group A Commodores essentially. The homolgation equivalent version in LH was an LH XU2 with L34 engine option (which came with other goodies too like bigger brakes)

I think you were closer to the mark first up, A9X was just the manufacturing code. Could have equally been an ABC, but that probably sounded too basic!!!

Just manufacturing codes. The manufacturing codes were transformed into marketing devices probably with the XU-1 that had it on its rear spoiler in a stylised format.

A9X is the production option code. Same as XX7, XV4, XW8 etc for a vehicle. Same coding as L31, M21 etc.

SL/R = supposedly sports luxury/ racing, as Pat has mentioned.
5000 = 5 litre engine.

The SL/R also was avaliable with 202 & 253 engines. Recognition by the body code on the id tags.
If an SL/R does not have L31 for the engine code, it ISN'T a 5000.....regardless of what the seller says.

he means what do they stand for. sl is easy i think alot of ppl jus make up their own R's

I always thought:
SL - Super Luxury
and
SS - Super Sport

and that SL/R was just some kind of afterthought, like 'Super Luxury/Racing'

Obi,
I had a look at the LX Torana Parts Catalogue and A9X means "Performance Equipment Package".I have nothing for the SLR or SS,I will keep on looking.

i got an original one at home, gold sparkle banana seat. doin it up, i lost the gear shifter thing tho, it was nifty it worked like a trimatic, it would go up gears on its own depending how fast u pedaled, i was gonna put a suicide shift onit lol

It wouldn't be bad to own one of those bikes, and you could have sold it at the top of the market - $30 always comes in handy!


A9XONE, Ian, you should change the wording on the side panel under your name from:

Car:Previously owned "a" Absinth Yellow A9X Hatchback

to

Car:Previously owned "THE" Absinth Yellow A9X Hatchback

Remember in your ad when you sold it to me, you said that it is the only A9X Hatchback in Absinth Yellow, which is right - Ah, Absinth makes the heart grow fonder.

I still can't believe I didn't try to get the price down from what you asked for it! And you could have warned me that there was no clutch, that was a fun drive down the F3, talk about nursing the car home.

I can't believe that was 14 years ago - the 9th September 1996 and it had 65,000k's on the clock and now it is up to 76,000k's.

And A9X is just the code for a factory option, you ordered an SS5000 or SL/R5000 and then got an option on it, just like you would order a Kingswood and then optioned factory air conditioning.

Not quite right for A9X AFAIK, but very close to the mark. Why I say that is for the bulk of the time you could order an A9X you couldn't order an SLR5000 or an SS with 5 litre unless it was an A9X. Which is slightly different to say ordering a HQ Kingswood sedan and optioning XW8 which turned it into a GTS350 sedan. Same basic principle though. What you describe though is exactly how a GTS327 was originally intended ie order a HK GTS (737) and optional L34 engine, gave you the GTS327. GMH changed this to hide the car from its US parent, but revived the practice with HQ GTS sedan (XV4 and XW8) and XU2 (SLR5000) then L34 on top of that.

That's not right. There were plenty of SS's and SL/R 5000's around at the same time as A9X's. (not to mention my 77 LX SL 5.0L T Bar auto)

That's not right either. The only time the L34 option was available was on the LH SL/R 5000.

I'll wear the first one, that's why I put AFAIK. So I stand corrected. I thought almost all 5 litre SLR and SS once A9X production started were A9X.

The second point is 100% correct. L34 is the engine code for 327 in HK. As 327 was gone by LH it was re-used in LH. Same deal as L20 was 186 in HK-HG and got re-used for 202 at HQ release. In HK L34 was not an offical option code though as it wasn't an option as such as the 327 engine was standard in GTS327 model, however the first GTS327 (yellow car you see on all the magazines of the day) was an L34 optioned GTS (737). Plus there was the odd Premier and other car (specials built by blokes at the plants) with L34 engine option.

Does anyone have conclusive proof on what SL/R stands for?

I recall back in the 80's the first interpretation I heard for SL/R was Sports Luxury / Rally.

Rally was bigger here in those days and I do recall seeing a Torana brochure with two models (SL/R and SS) at a rally. I think they were trying to market them as rally cars though V8's didn't do to well at rallys from my knowledge.

The SL/R gained full instrumentation, radial ply tyres, rally striping and a four speed floor shift manual (lesser models had a three speed column manual, with the four speed manual and the Trimatic auto both optional).

The 5000 of course is metric, 5 litres = 5000 cc or 5000 ml.

Mick, the clutch was working Ok when I had it,I don't know what happenned to the car after it was in your hands down the F3.Cheers Ian
