Great vid & great Narrative there Anton. I'm very impressed with your work & attention to detail to date.

Not sure if it's been asked before, but do you hope to debut your car at Toranafest this year?

Well done Anton coming together nicely now.
Don't worry the lifters and top end always sound
that shitty on first start up even with good oil pressure:)

Oh it sounds shitty does it? :D hahaha... Yea, I hate that rattly sound. When does it settle down?

Yes Brad, that very first fire-up and my arm must have been millimeters from that fan! Will refit the shroud this weekend.

Cheers for all the comments guys. HUGE milestone. I was so edgy leading up to that!

Well, I watched my own vid yesterday, thinking... that doesn't really sound how I expected it to. Decided to check the basics and found I had 2 leads mixed up. Set them right and adjusted the plug gaps and... BOOM! Now it sounds like a snarly, snappy V8. Once I fix up the idle I'll do a short vid of it running from the rear. The twin 2 1/2" exhaust is music to my ears!

Sept 20 huh? When is cut off for entry? I might set that date as my deadline for finishing, and debut it there.

Looks like I am looking in my own engine bay Anton.

We seem to be moving on at a similar pace.

I thought I may have been up and running by Torana Show here in Qld last year, sadly not the case. Given up on dead lines.

Engine first run was a similar result, quick timing set and adjust idle mixture and settled down but like your a bit tappety, does quieten down.

Are you running a run in oil?

I would post my video, but the site wont accept it when I go to add it.

HA! Too funny. Did you copy me? :P

I didn't use a running in oil. Engine builder recommended Penrite HPR30 with zinc. Said it was the ducks guts, and... the bees knees too!

I have been having a hell of a time getting my Papaya to idle. Decided to pull the carby and send it to Hume Performance here in Sydney. Even though I did strip and rebuild it, and it ran OK, I still knew that for the long term it wasn't rebuilt to match my motor. I also could not get the motor to idle, and was mucking around with all sorts of adjustments...

I gave them the engine and car spec, and the carby, and a few days later I got this back...

Today I bolted it back on, only to have... the same issue. Won't idle under 1100 rpm. Really frustrating!

So I swapped the coil over for an old spare I had. Still no good. Decided to replace the distributor with one of 2 spare standard dizzies I had. Checked out the part number and it is actually 100% correct for my car, so can't complain about that. Regapped the plugs and... Started first go and idled perfectly! Timing was spot on too. :D

What was the lesson I learnt in all of this? Procomp electronic dizzies absolute P.O.S. When I bought it a couple of years ago, I had never heard of Procomp. Thought I was getting a bargain electronic dizzy... lol. Since then, I have read tons of complaints about their stuff, but figured... nah, they are all just jumping on the bandwagon. Turns out that every gripe and complaint about Procomp stuff must be factual. In the bin it goes, and never again!

Remove the electrics, place them in the bin, fit Bosch gear in it.

Oooops... looked what happened today. I let a mechanic touch my car, and it grew number plates :D

Yep... After 5 years of serious dedication, where I pretty much did everything except machine the engine parts and sew the seat covers... An original... and I mean original SL/R, rolls out of the garage. I had a vision of the completed project, before I bought it. I had to make amends for bastardising a totally stock L32 SL/R back in 1993. I had to have a connection to my younger days, with a mature spin on it. Other than the lack of hubcaps (because my mint originals were so brittle they snapped like a kitkat), this by far exceeds my own expectations. Yes, it's an original L32 SL/R. Yes, it's a total grandpa style resto. Yes, I got lazy with updating this thread.... and yes, I actually spent money on a 253!

The first real drive was amazing. The smile on my face was only exceeded by the smiles on everyone else's faces as I drove past. There is not one rattle, not one vibration, no clunks, groans, grinds, or whines. It's better than brand new, and it's perfect.

Thanks to everyone here for sharing my journey. Thanks for the continual praise, support, tips and tricks. I might have somewhat lost interest in updating this thread, but I have never lost interest in the car, the brand, the era and everything else about the Torana.

What next? Some cruising!!!!
