I am after a front end alignnent place that can handle good old shims and slicks.
After organising Pedders Blacktown for 7:30am this morning I was greeted with the news that they cant handle slicks, end of story, so trailer L8 back home. Anyone got any recommendations?

Yeah, the humour was lost on me at the time (I was told that they do race cars etc) but Road and Race Perf can handle the slicks ok so booked in for tomorrow.

Apparently almost everyone's wheel alignment units require a tread pattern to grip so that they stay attached to the wheel.

mine can grab bald tyres. and id guess slicks would be even softer than passenger tyres. ive neverhad a problem with bald tyres not holding the heads unless the tyre was sopping wet

G'day Howard, our alignment mechine can handle slicks, I have both rim and tyre grip. We may have to put a few blocks before the hoist ramps but we should be able to get it on due to low ride height. I am booked out next week but after that I can sort it out for you if needed.

Thanks for the offer Len. I went down to Road and Race yesterday and Peter was able to set up the front end without any problems (4+ve caster, 3.5-ve camber, 1/16" toe out).. and for 2/3rd the price quoted by Pedders.

Glad to see you got it sorted Howard and at what sounds to be a reasonable price :)

Cheers
Al.

Yeah I hear Jim Hunters is the go.

FWIW how can you even align the front end of the tread? What if the tread is worn?

The problem with some machines is the way the sensors are attached to the rims. I have used some machines that are allergic to certain rim profiles, but most of the newer machines ( last 5 years or so )can handle virtually anything.

Unless you have a vehicle with drop guards, then the problems start with a lot of new machines.

I like resurecting old threads....
Anyone recomend a place in melbourne to do the same? No slicks but large tyres and bolt on flares so I understand most machines cant fit over them. Western suburbs/geelong would be even better ,but I cant be picky....
Thanks in advance

Edgars Tyrepower in Notting Hill has an alignment machine that can dis-able the rear sensors, meaning they only need to fit the sensors on the front wheels. Call and check first. 03 9560 9433 from memory.

Not a guru on this but I always found that if a shop puts on all the gear measures it all up and tells you what your alignment it like is not doing their job

A good job will be what your alignment was what they did to fix it and what they finished up with and what your vehicle should have

I know that wheel alignment are use to reduce the tire wear,it also helps vehicle to steer easily . But I want to know that what's the sign for improper alignment ? How much time auto shop will take ? As I am looking for the same for my dodge charger.

Uneven tyre wear

Not driving straight

Darting all over the road

Time taken depends on how much shim work is required, how close the exhaust is to the shim stack and how hot the exhaust is.
