Last year was run totally different, the option of having cars outside the circuit was not there. Personally, I think this year it was a mistake to put cars outside. I think our club was much better positioned last year than this year, though it did allow us to watch the races a little this year. I don't think Toranas were thin on the ground, especially since the XU1 club ran it's Nationals. I can sort of see where you are coming from with whats a muscle car and whats not, it's a fine line, and a factory 308 SL hatch is a rare car if it's genuine. However I'm sure the organisers had already allocated where they were parking clubs prior to the event, hense the reason I was only given 30 spots, and clubs like the HDT club had to borrow spots from other clubs ( i had a few guys who are not members who had L34's and A9X's join with our club too) as they had something like 52 cars turn up. You mentioned you had an SLR5000(as an example only), but it was a member of your club which had been allocated spots near the grandstand. The p76 thing, well as lame as we may think they are, that is that factories performance model, so it's entitled to go, and I'm sure organisers would have liked to have had a wide range of different makes represented. The HDT 05 79 replica you mentioned was actually displayed with our club last year, purely because some official parked it with us. In the end we let him stay under the covers because some of our members were late and it looked like they had pulled out due to the rain.
I had my own issues this year. My label blew off the windscrean on the way, and they tried to first charge me entry, then said I couldn't go in the circuit because I had no label, despite the fact I had my letter, and my label backing in the car!! There were certainly some issues that need to be addressed before next year. On combining the clubs, that may or may not work. As I said, clubs wre allocated a number of spots. If that happens next year, and all the Torana clubs go under one banner, they may only get 30 spots, so some people are going to miss out and have to park outside again if they run it that way. If that happens, how do you say who gets to go in, and who doesn't? All these things are just issues that always happen at shows, someone is alway unhappy with how things go. Remember the shitfight with people at the Torana show at Bathurst in 2004? Lots of people were unhappy, but in a lot of cases, it was out of the organisers hands, but he copped a flogging over it never the less. See if you have a copy of the letter you were sent, if it only offers you the parking in the coral, then everyone should have known what was going on, if they offered you skidpan parking, then maybe your club rep did not take up that option, or it could have of course been a complete stuff up.

^ drawing some long bows there Mick.

My understanding is that cars that attended last year in the appaulling weather were offered central positions. We attended this year in the hope that it will improve our lot next year. Not overly fussed on parade laps, prefer to pay to go seperately and do the track at speed.

I agree, maybe only cars 25 years or older. You'd probably find that half the Commies/Falcons are leased cars as part of salary packages, and not really cared for. I think that's the difference between our cars and the newer models. We actually know our cars back-to-front and inside-out. Not cheque book enthusiasts, although a cheque book does always help the cause.

Drawing some long bows? Please explain? I think I have stated some simple facts there, and remember, I'm not an organiser of this event. I don't understand why the cars have to be a certain age, or if it matters who owns it, as any cars that go to something like this would be looked after one way or another anyway. I think if you read back through this thread I told everyone what the deal was right from the start with where people would be parking. I was only trying to pass the info onto everyone to help the cause.

Sorry, um yeah, didn't have a problem with your post mostly, just the bits where you could be seen to be speaking on behalf of the organiser. At the end of the day, despite what letters, tickets, etc. you have, you'll end up where they put you.

The highlight for such events is the trip away with the boys and the drive more than the event, and that part of the event was larger than life. The fellas are still raving about it.

No certainly not trying to speak for them, just saying it how it was. As for the where they put you bit, well no, I don't agree, if you have the tickets etc to say where you should be, and some gate guard tells you something different, take it up with the organisers, thats what I did. I just got straight on the phone to Phil Harrison and it was cleared up. They want to run a good event, and They want to keep people happy, unfortunately, you can't please everyone, luckily now however, there are plenty of events to cater for everyone. We have had the Summernats for years, it's about time we had something that caters for the purist rather than the dickheads that turn up at summernats just to get pissed and trash cars, and they seemed to be in the majority the last years I went. As you say though, the highlight should be getting with mates and having a good time.

I must say, as good as the event was, If I am unable to get a position in the arena next year I won't be bringing my car.. Our cars up on the hill looked like they had been in a desert storm after the event.. You can also gaurantee that they won't feature in the DVD either..

Some things certainly need to be looked at. When we finally got the parade lap well after 4pm (scheduled for 2.20pm) the place was empty, even the track announcer had announced that was the end of procedings and "see every one next year" and we still had not entered the track. Also a few signs around the place directing where cars are on display might have been helpful. People I spoke to after the event did not know the XU1/A9X groups where over the side skidpan near the medical centre. While it was not to bad a spot to be in, it was certainly out of the way.

You know you guys can take some good out of the "weekend on the hill"..
It is one of the best spectator spots on the track....
and was also one of the most vocal....
Around lap 4 of the Harry Firth trophy on sunday morning I exited the last corner onto the main straight more than a little sideways.. anyhow.. as i pulled 3rd I heard a roar from the hill, so i looked up to see a hill covered in toranas and screaming Torana drivers...I relayed this story after the race to another couple of competitors and all agreed....
So THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT GUYS!
Even if the promoter tried to hide you we(the racers) knew you were there.

Cheers Greg.. NSW #26 Nc XU-1.

^ you have a point there Greg. That turn with the dip in it before you head up to the last two corners before the straight was awesome. Lots a cars very sideways thanks to the dip. One of these days though, I will take my walkman (maybe wife will update it to something more trendy & current for me) so I can tune into the commentary.

Still having said that, will prolly just buy the DVD so I can watch the races.

Like I said, the show was just one small part of the whole weekend for me, but all still good. Whether you were up on the hill or the pan, I think all areas and all car shows your going to get flaming dust.

My concern is, that it will become popular and sooner or later the dickheads will arrive and wreck it. I'd hate to see that happen, but seems to be the way of good shows, only seem to have a limited life before the rot (dickhead factor) sets in.

PS Still didn't get to meet Greg!!! One day mate.

Hopefully next year things will change a little i'd prefer not to be down on the figure 8 next year, too far out of the way, no one knew we were there.

Hey Mick

just a thought, with 2007 being the 30th year of the A9X and all. I reckon you guys could always come up to Newcastle for Toranafest.

We'd even give you guys center stage :spoton:

and there's no dust!!

cheers
Mick

Just some comments/ observations from me - I agree, the skid pan wasn't very visable from the pits - my Dad & I went straight into the pit area when we got there, and had a look around, and after watching the first few races/ demo's from the top of the pit boxes, we walked through the show area out the back, and then to the outside of the circuit to move around to several vantage points to watch the racing throughout the day. It wasn't until the afternoon, when we ended up down the end of pit straight, that I noticed all the torana's at the skid pan.... by then it was too late to get over & have a look!

Looking around the show cars, and what we saw of the parade laps, there were a few cars there that seemed out of place, or not quite of the standard you'd expect. I would think that if the organisers are interested in getting the cream of the crop, they need to ask for applications with photo's & specs of the cars, and judge from that who is worthy of a prime spot, and who should be relegated to the 'thanks for coming anyway' spots....

But I do have to say congratulations to the organisers - It was the first masters for my dad & I, and we thoroughly enjoyed it - he got to re-live some memories from his youth, & I got to hear them! We are both looking forward to next year, and will be attending come hell or high water!

Oh, and as for the torana parade lap - I was still there! I didn't want to miss a minute..... but as the weather closed in, we had to make a dash for the car - I really felt sorry for you guys - best cars of the show, and everyone (including the comentators) had packed up & gone home!

as for the dickhead element you refer - he was in front of me in the que to leave the carpark!...crappy XD falcon, spinning wheels in the dirt (wow, must be a tough car! :<_<: ) and spraying stones & dirt all over my car....hope it doesn't go the way of summernats.
