Well I did a bit more to the monaro yesterday. I even got the bonnet open. The bonnet was latched right down with no cable fitted, so was a challenge : )
I then started to remove the rest of the filler from the right hand rear quarter. I'd already removed about 4mm of filler when I took this pic, but you can still see how thick it is. Lovely repair this one : )
Here it is with all the filler removed. It's a typical spot for monaros to rust, but this repair is very sad.
I also started getting the surface rust off the lower part of the quarter. It's taking a while to metal prep this car as the surface rust is quite deep. In this next pic I'm about halfway through getting the rust off.
I then turned my attention to the bootlid. It had big patces of filler at the rear and a bit on top, so I dug them out.
Whoever did the filler work on this car did a really good job, as it felt really straight, where here you can tell it obviously isn't. I think I'll spend a bit more time on the metal rather than the filler.
The trim piece that joins the tail lights together along the bootlid is obviously a fair old moisture trap, as the pitting in this area is really deep.
I made a bit of a start on the other side but ran out of time. I sanded the last lot of rust converter down and covered the whole lot again.

One of these

And some random other shit, then you could get it to clean bare metal ready for etch in about an hour....
Cheers.

your doing a great job so far getting through years of bog,and repairs.
they nearly all rust under the quarter window like that, there,s an inner panel and the outer skin is about 5mm away, the boys at holden thought the 2 panels would vibrate,so they fitted a felt strip to stop that from happening, but guess what, moisture trap.

a mates monaro had the same patches under the rear quarter windows after he had it blasted, i thought it was a pretty random spot for a repair. what makes them rust out there?
Probably just a reinforced channel that runs along there. Water gets in the rear quarter glass and gets trapped there. Just my guess.
As for the repair... At least they had a go with replacing metal with metal, looks to me like he just didn't form correctly and welds aren't grinded smooth. But yeah, should have been and could have been better, lucky you have nothing better to do then rust repairs eh Tim. haha I'd hate for you to get an easy job and have a thread only lasting 8 pages lol. Just kidding mate, if anyone is good enough to do it, its you.
hi dirtbag,

Whoops didn't see your post mate. Sorry, guess I was right then eh?

I also recleaned some of the steel for the third time to get rid of the surface rust. It's got some staying power.
I also stripped back the drivers door jam.
I didn't worry about cleaning the front of the rear quarter as it's pretty stuffed so I'll make a new piece for there.
Then it got what will hopefully be it's last coat of rust converter before it gets etch primed.
Even though the metal was nice and shiny silver after using the clean and strip disc, it still came up with rust when I put the rust converter on it. Grrrrr! It's a lot better than it was though.
Now there's room for a 540 merlin and tremec. hehehe, well that's what I'd want in there anyway : )
Next will be to strip the left rear quarter, door jam and rear beaver panel. Then hopefully get it etch primed and then the fixing can start.

Around the windows and boot jam, passengers door jam, dash top, plenum, left rear quarter and rear valance all got stripped.
All the boxes of crap and bits and pieces finally got taken out of the inside too.
Excuse the pics though, I used my phone.
These pics don't show just how knackered the panel under the rear bumper is, but trust me, it's stuffed.
The panel was filled with bog as it's fairly badly dented, but it's also rusted. Where it joins the inner panel along the bottom is even rusted through the two pieces in some places.
Can you get replacement lower rear valances for these things or do I have to make it? Either way, it's getting replaced : )
It's nice to be able to see inside it now all the stuff has been removed.
Another bit that needs replacing.
Same rust in the rear pillar as on the other side. Nothing too drastic though.
There is a bit of rust in this area in front of the rear wheel tub, under the rear seat.
I was trying to show how much bog was in the left rear quarter by showing how deep the dent is with a straight edge, but it's hard to see.
My friends finger shows how big the gap is. Took a while to dig all the bog out!!
Again more usual monaro rust areas.
The left rear quarter has had a new lower section welded on. It's not done too badly, but it's been welded in with brass. I'll melt the brass out and weld it properly, as brass is the devil!
There is a bit of rust around the base of the rear window.
Well it's all in rust converter again and is looking good. I'll get it in etch primer first thing in the morning finally!!!!
Then I can start chopping the old beast up : )

the passenger quarter has a repair where in a past life it had a scrape near the "c" pillar now instead off tapping it out they belted it in further and welded another quarter section onto the repair without cutting the section out it realy made me look twice when i started to strip it down. i knew it had bog from the inside feel and when i started the grinder up i hit metal about 2 mm in. i ground further and went wow
oh well lucky ive got a spare shell to cut the quarter off.
good to see you got some time to get back onto the monaro

So far have polished it up, will repaint one day, put new wheels on, upgraded front disk brakes and added stripes. It goes to Melbourne this week for full interior restoration. It is going to be done Goya Red. Also currently being shipped from the USA is a 400+ HP 383 Chev and Turbo 350 box.
That will be it though for now as focus turns to putting the LC GTR back together that l purchased a few months ago.

Well I got a bit more done today.
I sanded the car down again after rust converting it yesterday, for the 5th time : )
Finally the metal stays silver after sanding. No more brown spots!!
Here's another look at the panel under the rear bumper.
It's nice to finally have this car all sealed up with epoxy etch.
You can see some of the problems on the rear guard.
You can see some of the issues with the left rear quarter here.
The rear panel is a beauty, so here's another pic : )
That's all I did to the monaro today, but I'm glad to have it primed finally.
I did chop the living daylights out of the V8 kombi though : )

I'm guessing you won't be fixing any of that with bog?
