Whatcha doin with the rear "perfectly straight" part of the guard? will you replace the part above the wheel arch only?

Well done Tim... Did you make the half lower quarter as well as the top piece or just the top ? if you made the bottom as well then thats a hell of an accomplishment.

I was planning on doing that, but was put onto rare spares who supplied all the new outer rust repairs I needed. Yay rare spares : )

Having said that, the lower piece wouldn't have been too hard to make, but replacement panels are cheaper and easier hehehe.

Yay rare spares : )

Good on you! It's easier to "tweek" a Rare's bit than to try and fab one.............even though you've got the gear. :spoton:

Yeah, if it were my car (I wish!!!!) I'd have made it myself, as I'm not paying for my time, but in this case it would have been cheaper to go with the rare spares pieces, so we did : )

Yeah, it's a 383 with well over 450hp at the wheels. 4 speed muncie and spooled 9 inch. 15x10 front and 15x12 rear welds. Cool car.

Just needs chrome bumpers and door handles : )

nice rebuild, just gorked through most of it
i have a ques... you cover the bare metal with rust convertor. what do you do after that to remove the rust convertor?
at a guess you sand it off back to bare metal, then if surface rust still present, repeat process with rust convertor until all gone?
sanding with a block by hand or the grinder and with what grit approx? then cover with primer?

thanks heaps.. need to know for and idea of what to do when i get around to my torana doors

Hey snot : ) The rust converter I use doesn't have to be totally removed. Once I'm happy with the colour the metal has turned after rust converting and the converter is dry I just dry sand it with 120 grit paper to get the loose bits off and to key the surface for the 2 pac epoxy etch primer.
I hope that helps.

Oh, in regards to there still being rust on the metal like this car had, I sand the bad bits with 36 grit discs on a grinder and reapply the rust converter.

Sorry Dom I didn't answer your question. I'll probably end up fabricating a piece to replace the really pitted part over the wheel arch. I"ll have a bash at it first, but it looks like it might be easier to replace it.

Thanks Tim.

It looks very compounded, curves and flats, how does one make a panel like that. Better give us lots of pictures. ;-)

Hey Dom. Well I had a bit of a look at the rear guard today. It's pretty ordinary so I thought I'd have a go at making a new piece.

Posted Image

I stuck some wax paper over the panel so I could draw on the outline to get a rough template for tracing onto steel.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

I don't have the skills of Tom Peach to make an entire quarter from scratch, so will be leaving the bits that are still in good nick in place, such as the tail light surround.

With the paper cut to shape I taped it onto some 1.2mm zinc and traced it out.

Posted Image

This next shot shows some thick black texta lines through the middle of the panel. One is for where the crease is that runs down the side of the guard, the other is for the lower crease/step.

Posted Image

The reason for the texta lines is I used a pounce wheel to perforate the paper, so when I coloured over it the texta goes through the holes and marks the steel.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Once I cut the piece out, I stuck the template on the other side of the panel so I could mark the slight swage line that I need to fold. I have to fold it from the back side, that's why I'm having to do this.

Posted Image

Then I put the fold in. Now it looks like this. Note I haven't trimmed the bottom of the new piece yet. I'll do that when I'm happy with how the rest of it fits.

Posted Image

I then started running it through the english wheel. I started with a fairly flat bottom wheel as I don't want to put too much crown into the panel.

I also started hammering out the flare. It needs to come out further, as it's holding the panel away from the car at the moment, but I'd rather not go far enough with it than too far. It's easier to keep going than it is to undo.

Well that's all I got done to this one today, but it's a start.
