As for the flares, no sign of them yet. Maybe this weekend? If I wasn't so lazy I'd go and get them myself : )
I get my back wheels back with the new tyres fitted on sunday. Yay!

I've been spending/wasting a bit of time lately on my ute so it was good to get back to a proper job : )
I spent a while this arvo adjusting all the doors just to make sure they could be lined up properly, then I pulled all the hanging panels off.
Luckily for me the owner has already done all the work in the engine bay, so that's one area I don't have to worry about. I dont want to get overspray all over it though so I masked it up.
Next job will be to finish sanding the whole shell down and get any repairs done and reprime the whole thing. I'll get the shell paint ready then move on to the hanging panels.

Will you be doing the final paint and assemble?
Do you have music playing while you work?
Hi Baillie. Yes I'll be doing all the prep and paint on this. I'll be doing at least some of the assembly, like all hanging panels and bodykit but not sure about the rest.
As for music - yes - LOTS OF METAL!!!!!!!!! GOOD FAST HEAVY METAL!!!! : )

If you take into account that VN commodores look like bloated whales balls, that wagon looks bloody awesome. Nice work man. There's very few VNs I'd actually have but you can give me that anyday. How's tomorrow for you?
I agree on both accounts.
Sorry but that one is not mine.
I do have a VN for my daily though, and it currently looks like this -
No you can't have it, but i will consider a trade - (my shitbox wagon, plus 20k which I don't have) for your LX Utility.

BAILLIE, are you you insane???
Awesome job but.................. Oh never mind
No, not my ride. See above.
I am actually worse than insane.
I did the black on mine with a brush.... on a hot day.... outdoors.... with no thinners..... and an impossible wet edge to achieve.
Considering all that, it turned out well. You can't see the ripples unless close up, and looking close up at any new black car i see, the finish is equally shithouse.
If i had any other option of course i would have done it better. I didn't want to use pressure pack, i have got very good results with a brush before, and it only took 15 mins to mask the whole thing.

Gee, I would, but my ute is an LH not an LX, so you wouldn't want it. Oh well : )
Dang it !
I would prefer an LX wagon I must admit.
We have had this conversation before, but i swear if i ever win Lotto or decide to actually work hard for money ever again, i will build such a device and may need to commission your help : )
Just don't tell me your fee for spending 2 days working on the flares alone, i am buying Wilsons and don't want to know.

You havnt seen a finish from someone who can paint then i assume????
OEM = Shithouse
Black is easy.
Cheers.

I know what a good finish is, i just never noticed before - the massive ripple effect on new OEM cars.
Just looking on the bright side that I basically achieved the look i wanted for less than $100. I have used a very similar method before with a brush and got a perfect finish, but this was a rush job to tide me over until i can actually access a shed again.

Yeh, you can see for yourself with those pics. (not my car, the all black one)
Takes ages and the colour choice is limited without mixing your own, but it seems that very acceptable results can be had for WAY less than the cost of a pro job. You can follow the link i posted (under those pics) to the street comm site that has the full guide to it. You also get the satisfaction of giving it a go your self and saving a ton of coin. Oh, and Sweet Fk All masking

I had the pleasure of sanding all the door jams down for the next shot of primer.
I took some of the boot opening back to metal as I wasn't totally happy with how the existing paint was sticking.
I also got all the flares into some sort of shape after all the cutting and reglassing.
Once I was happy with how the shell was shaping up I got it ready for some stone guard.
Then once that was sorted and dry I gave the whole lot a few coats of primer.
With that fun job taken care of I turned my attention to the heater box.
It's getting trimmed down, but not as much as I did on my brothers car.
I dug the old board I made to do my brothers heater box. It makes the job a lot easier as it holds the heater box in shape while I chop and glass it.
I sanded the inside down with 40 grit and cleaned it with acetone before glassing.
It was a pretty hot day today so didn't take long to dry enough for me to unmask. There wont be a lot of filler in it when it's finished as it's basically the right shape already.
Well that's it for today. Next job will be to block the new primer down with 240 dry and reprime it for top coat.
It's starting to shape up now.
