With the dollar the way it is against the green back I just bought a CHEV Merlin Alloy X block cheaper (delivered) than you can buy the Australian (COME)block for.

My 540 Shafiroff motor cost me US$13400, but with the exchange rate at the time, it actually cost me A$12900. Pretty cheap considering I am getting a dart Big M block, callies crank, manley rods, Dart alloy heads, roller cam, new 950 carby etc etc. If I wanted such a engine built here I would get no change out of $20k.

I'D say lots more than $20 000. My Freind Marcell took his crate LS7 to BG engines, and they basically took it appart put on AFR heads new pistons, rods, roller cam ect and cost $17 000. He should have just bought a Sharoff instead! Would have had an LS7 to sell and gets some money back.

The 454 engine run stand has progressed. I pinched the radiator out of the HQ and used it as I didn't want to attack my new Aussie Desert Cooler alloy radiator with a drill to mount it.

Posted Image

I mounted up the Race Pumps stainless fuel line kit and struck a problem with my quest to keep the carby under the bonnet. THe reg goes too close to the heads with the -8 90 degree fitting on it. I think I will run a 1" spacer and practice for the 540. 3" cowl scoop is going to happen.

I have a problem with the starter motor I borrowed hitting the camaro pipes I have:

Posted Image

I bought a set of HQ pipes. I pick em up tomorrow.

I bought a ridiculously large battery from VPW. Only $250 ish

And a ridiculously big radiator from Aussie Desert Coolers:

Different inlet manifold perhaps? Don't want to give the game away with a cowl scoop?

XRP make low profile fittings that may solve the problem.

The HK wagon left for Makay today. Now I have room in the shed for the HQ. I can begin to build her up.....or tear her down 1st.

Nice project Mark!

I'm going against the trend here... and voting for cowl scoop and rims :) Maybe Weld Pro Stars, they would look ace with that body and colour.

Thanks mate.

The beauty of a car like this, is it can be converted from sleeper to hotty in a matter of moments with a wheel and bonnet change.

I got a 1" spacer for the carby to sort out the fuel regulator problem. It's temporary setup for the engine run stand, I might change it around when the motor is running in the car. I plumbed the -4 return line also. I am liking the black fuel lines!

I have been working pretty hard on the old girl lately. Pulled the front clip off, removed the engine and g/box. And I pulled out the chassis and bare metaled it:

Some people put the WB RTS braces in them. I have been chatting to the engineer, and he didn't mention any extra bracing, so long as I run a 454 with alloy heads to keep the weight down.

Thats a good point, you could use a WB chassis i guess?
I thought you could box the rails also but not sure if the engineer would ok that

I thought a lot of people removed those braces for exhaust clearance with a big block though?

I would brace where the chasis goes at 90 degrese next to the firewall, my mates big block Q cracked there and had to be strengthened with some gussets.

Looks just like factory. Then a custom flat firewall would be nice

I have made a simple little rule with this car build....."No custom welding or grinding". I dont want to modify the factory metal. I did all that on my last build and I wasted heaps of time doing it, and regretted it in the end. This car will not be a show car, more like a cruise night car. Neat and tidy, but aimed more at driving the wheels off it.
