They should have 2.5 pints of oil. Or 1.42 litres. Drain the old oil first and see what comes out.

That figure was from the workshop manual. More won't hurt, however if you use too much it could work it's way past the extension housing seal.

You can fill the box thru the speedo drive hole using a pump. You will have to have the back of the car about a foot higher than the front to do it...
PS>>> Gorrilla Mechanics......cut all his spanners in half!!! :spoton:

Cheers Greg..

Good luck with that gearbox and the many troubles it has/will cause you ToranaZ.

I have been through 3 shifters ,3 gear boxes ,1 Fully rebuilt all aussie M20;s They are completely USELESS!!Sloppy shifters ,Looking for gears evey gear,Popping out of gear,USELESS linkages ,obsolete linkage parts ,Leaking OIl ,grinding ,slipping, crunching, missing You name it they cost me an arm and a leg ,andmore trouble than they are worth!!!I have just gbought a celica for its gearbox, tailshaft and speedo, got the bell housing from dellow, custom cross memeber ,done the conversion waiting for the modified tailshaft to get back from the engineers and cant wait to have a nice notchy clean shifting box that wont screw up under any pressure and an extra gear should have done this 10 years ago and saved myself the constant trouble of having an unreliable piece of crap like the M20 !!!!!!!!!!!

Just to add fuel to the fire, one of my mates suggested running 1 part engine oil to 2 parts gearbox oil. I am using Castrol VMX 80 and engine oil like he suggested and so far not having any problems, apart from the gearbox shifter being total screwed.

back in the 80's i used the oil that holden recommended for the asian made 4/5 speeds in the commonwhores. was like trans fluid but with the high pressure additives in it. worked good stopped the hard to pick up 2nd gear when cold.

One thing that i think has been overlooked, the synchro cones and the matching drive rings, that the whole thing drives on could be damaged.
If the reco box has secondhand parts then this can be where the slipping is coming from, see the photo.

Posted Image

If the crowns that go inside the drive hub are worn or damaged it will jump out of gear as well.

Its not hard to put it in gear, but under pressure it will jump out.

Too be clear the drive hub is pushed over the synchro (bronze peice) then the driven gear, its this driven part that needs to be in good condition to stay in gear.

I think damage to the cluster will only make noise (my opinion only)

These gearbox's are one of the simplest to work on, but some little things can make life miserable, as stated broken circlips and synchro energiser springs.

But jumping out of gear, is from my experience, damaged crowns and or sliding hubs.

There were also dodgey bearing kits some years ago that supplied wrong dimension circlips and front bearing/circlips that caused jumping out of 3rd and 4th gear.

true true and true. are you going to repair it your self ?
just check the cluster gear teeth on 1st gear to make sure
there is no damage also.
jumping out of gear is a nother problem for many reasons
but you can fix them at the same time.
when i had the holden wreakers i use to recondition these every
day for years. i can almost to them with eyes closed lol.
like i say ive got shit loads of parts maybe enough parts to
put 10 gearboxs together.
any ways if you need something give a yell
