That figure was from the workshop manual. More won't hurt, however if you use too much it could work it's way past the extension housing seal. They should have 2.5 pints of oil. Or 1.42 litres. Drain the old oil first and see what comes out.

hi there, is the cluster gear damaged as well or is it just 1st gear.troy i pulled gearbox out today pulled my cover off and found 1 tooth on first gear missing rang about fixing it $1250 to do the job. i think for that price im gonna go supra 5 speed especially as my lj has a warm 308 in it.
ive got shit loads of parts as home but no m21 clusters or input shafts.
are you close to newcastle ?

If the reco box has secondhand parts then this can be where the slipping is coming from, see the photo.
If the crowns that go inside the drive hub are worn or damaged it will jump out of gear as well.
Its not hard to put it in gear, but under pressure it will jump out.
Too be clear the drive hub is pushed over the synchro (bronze peice) then the driven gear, its this driven part that needs to be in good condition to stay in gear.
I think damage to the cluster will only make noise (my opinion only)
These gearbox's are one of the simplest to work on, but some little things can make life miserable, as stated broken circlips and synchro energiser springs.
But jumping out of gear, is from my experience, damaged crowns and or sliding hubs.

just check the cluster gear teeth on 1st gear to make sure
there is no damage also.
jumping out of gear is a nother problem for many reasons
but you can fix them at the same time.
when i had the holden wreakers i use to recondition these every
day for years. i can almost to them with eyes closed lol.
like i say ive got shit loads of parts maybe enough parts to
put 10 gearboxs together.
any ways if you need something give a yell
