I think I used 2 flat blade screwdrivers on the washer to compress the spring. One screwdriver in my mouth the other in my right hand. And used my left hand to slip the C clip on.

Thanks guys,
I considered this but thought it likely to bugger the cir-clip given the shaft OD is greater.
Thought it might twist or bend it, but clearly I need not worry - you've done it without issue.
Thanks for your advice.
Cheers, TB

I only had the c-clip less than half pushed on. You just have it touching the column pinched between the spring and the pipe. When you have pushed down to the groove then you push the c-clip further in.

Hi guys, I replaced the upper bearing in my Torry and like everyone else, had the issue of how to secure the replacement. I bought the replacement bearing form rare spares as I had destroyed the cast lip getting the old bearing out like most people do. It's a bad design of holden. Anyway heres what i did. The replacement bearing has a pressed indent on the outside diameter so I had a groove machined into the housing that would line up with the bearing indent once installed. Then, carefully I used a long drillbit and went in through either the hole for the indicator stalk or key barrel, I cant remember and drilled a hole into the bearing housing. Then I slid a piece of aluminium wire through the hole and around the bearing. I cut the ally rod and bent it over so it could be removed down the road. The rod fits between the indent of the bearing and the groove in the housing and locks it all in place. Saves having to machine too much out of the housing for different bearings etc.

I dont have a pic sorry so hopefully it makes sense.

Hi,

Just looking at doing this job..

how do I get the coffe pot off altogether...i.e. must have to remove the LJ key switch? or the connecting rod that runs down the column?

I have trawled a heap of thered, but just cant find the answer, sorry...

p.s. have pressed that little flat spring steel thingo down ( 12 o'çlock in pic ) but that only lets it come off a bit further? not all the way

Remove the switch from down the column that the rod goes into, then you can twist it around sideways and disconnect the rod. Then it will just slide off after removing the circlip, wiggle the wiring and rod around as required to do so cleanly, no need to remove the key barrel.

If you do want to remove the key barrel later.
