For bolt-in min fuss those new M22's are the only way to go (if your not going 5/6speed). I had a brand new M22 years ago in my hatch behind a very stout 620Hp SB Chev and it was indestructible. Awesome box that is as tough as it sounds. I was far more careless in my young days and hammered the hell out of it (refused to break). Forget recon boxes or the weak as piss Saginaw's,T10's etc, you will only get buyers remorse (if you drive your car hard).

Remember GM stopped using Muncies and went back to the T10

Super T10s, not the old T10. But yeah aside from the ratio options I don't really see the advantage over a Muncie either

The reality was although light years better than the all aussie M21, the Super T10 used in the racing A9X (380-400hp) was a very marginal gearbox. If you don't drive like your driving Miss Daisy, you can't go wrong with the M22.

The best person to ask about the new M22's is member Jason365 as he has one in his hatch.

If I remember the Super T10's and M22 Rock Crusher Mucies share a lot of parts, I think the differences are to do with the lower gears sets at straiter angles etc, hence the whine but 32 spline main shaft ect are interchangeble. But if you can buy new, it is stronger overall.

THE M22W {WIDE RATIO} IS AWESOME,though they are a bit dearer than $1750 US as mentioned in a previous post then you have freight costs and custom clearance charges ect so they come in close to $3000 by the time its at youre door, i ran ol m20s for years in competition with very few problems behind a 450 hp 355, i only broke one when i stepped up to my 365ci combo that makes 500 hp and that box was the box that had done nearly all of my racing so i think fatigue played a part in that aswell,i had enough muncies laying around to keep running them for a long time but after my crash and rebuild i just wanted everything tough as nails so i dont have to worry when we go away racing i can just concentrate on my driving and being quick.
the new boxes do have an iron midplate and .100'' thicker case made from better quality alloy, full width front bearing, beefed up extension housing and a needle roller side cover.just be sure to delete the roller first gear when ordering as these are standard on all new boxes but wont take to much drag strip type launches, they free up a few hp but are more suited to road race were the take off arent so harsh.

don,t be fooled buy talk of toploaders being strong,a 450hp engine will smash these peices of crap every time,450hp isn,t much these days the wife drives a 450hp GTS to go shopping.

i fitted one unfortunatly to my HK monaro and put my good muncie on the shelf,as i had a complete toploader conversion,

first run down the quarter good, lasted a full day 9 runs, next outing broke 2nd gear, rebuild box new gear, full bearings, then next drag day, tow for miles only to smash 2nd again.bought another box only to destroy it aswell, now my new engine 560hp, and a new muncie will last for years, the old one i,ve punished for many years and is fine.

i dont know who the guys in the link above are but this is were you buy new muncies from http://www.autogear.net/ they desinged and manufacture the supercase, iron mid plate, needle roller side cover and beefed upper extension housing.the italian antonio masiero m22w gear set is also theres. the genuine masiero m22w gear sets have the following ratios 2.56 - 1.75 - 1.36 - 1.00, the m22w ratios advertised on here http://www.tbtrans.c...cie_4_speed.htm are 2.52 - 1.88 - 1.46 - 1.00, same as the later m20s. the supercases, mid plates and side covers on there are all autogears stuff..http://www.autogear.net/Links1.htmlcom/.this the link on the autogear site to a list of autogear authorised distributors.
deal with the right people to get the best results.

Went and had a look at that site, that is very impressive! Everthing new and improved, you would have to be nuts to rebuild one unless your after matching numbers for cases etc. Noticed they sell the T10's as Muncie Super T10's. I think they have just improved and standardised them all. Great site!

You can also get M21s with overdrive (0.86) 4th.

Thats sounds like not a bad idea either, although the car is built for fast take off at the moment. What are the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear ratio's when they have the over drive at 0.86 and where are these available? Linky please Lima31?

I put a link to the site on the previous page. They modify 3rd gear to be overdrive and you just swap the selector on 3rd/4th upside down (this is helpful as it gets the shift rod for that gear below the floor line, rather than up in the tunnel). There is a picture on the link I posted and you'll see what I mean. It doesn't really help all that much but it will allow you to cruise a bit more comfortably on the street with 4.11's or gearing like that. Probably not suited for 1/4 mile duty though. I think the intent is for weekend cruisers to allow them to sit better at highway speeds with low diffs.

Edit: link I put up is actually in the T5 vs Getrag thread. Have a look there.

I run a saginaw in my Hatch

Yeh its abit noisy and the shifter isn't as smooth as a new car

But its been pulling low 12's on the quarter mile for the last 10 years and never misses a beat

I can attest to new houses, come with new responsabilities, as I moved into mine last week after a month of dramas

My advice,.. stick with the saginaw, there are worse boxes used by holden and when you've got 3 or 4 grand to through at gear box, then go for it.

Yeah I would like to change the shifter over first then maybe get the better box later. Everyone says these saginaws are useless but they cant be that bad, they use to put these into Monaro's behind 350 chevs.

My brother in Adelaide has a HG monaro with a very strong AFR Alloy headed roller camed 400 chev, behind a Saginaw. Does a front shaft every so often, has had the cluster modified for a muncie one. It hangs in there if you treat them OK (no burnouts), he is up grading to a TKO though, he will keep the original setup as well.

They aren't useless, but they were pretty much at their limit with a 300-350hp 350 Chev in a HG GTS350 late type (with McKinnon engine). WIll last all day behind a 308 but a stroked 308 with work done to it will easily break one if you give it too much.

What have you guys got as your shifters? Just the normal left hand side tunnel shifter or something modified or centered?
