Hey guys and gals!

I'll tell you a bit about myself before i go on with the car (story sounds better if you know how hard it was for the UC to be completed)!!

For starters im 20yrs old! And have owned my UC since i was 13yrs old! My mum bought it brand spankers in the year 1980, i was only a thought at that stage! I started my working career at a Pizza Hut store where i was promoted numerous times, then finally became the 2IC! But crappy money and constant reminders that fast food wasnt enough got to me - so i chose a trade! A trade where my only customers were 6foot by 6foot and made of rock and copper! I work at a mine in Mid Western QLD! The roster is pretty annoying (14/7), but the pay and working conditions are more than worth it! I started getting serious with my UC about July this year (2005), when i purchased a myriad of stuff - including a 179HP and $4500 worth of Pearl Blue respray!

Ive spent ALL my weeks off since i can remember building the HP up to what it [finally] is today!! In total it took 3months to build, but if you discount the weeks im at work it is only 3weeks total, so thats a pretty quick rebuild (at home mind you - a 2bedroom unit with single garage and no space!)!

The motor's had over $4000 in NEW gear, and boring, dipping and chrome parts (and the way it drives now - i got my money's worth!).

To be completed.... Sorry guys! Ran out of time!

I paid $165 for the HP (it was from a wreckers), i sent it away for boring and what not, and built it myself!

For what the HP your getting has, i would suggest an offer like $1000 - you wouldnt have to pay more for an old holden 6 these days unless its been build by victor bray and runs 10's!

....When i finish my original post, you would note that mine has an XU-1 camshaft and 350Holley, and over $1200 in headwork. I might finish it now....

Good luck with the HP - they're really strong motors!

Anywhere from 3 to 5k is the going price for a JP these days and then it might not be complete at the lower end of the scale ie 3k.

It has tinted windows, CYCLOPS alarm/immobiliser/central locking kit, woodgrain steering wheel, Autometer Cobalt tacho (and dash lights of same blue colour), and 2 Speco gauges (oil pressure and water temp - both mechanical gauges). The fresh Pebble Brown superplush carpet has been installed also. Pics of Carpet and Speco gauges are yet to be uploaded to my computer - but i have taken some!!

It is mobile through the 4speed manual with 3.08:1 diff ratio, sits on GLOBE Bathurst 14" by 7" colour matched rims with Yokohama A509 225/60 rubber.

Yeah, i was gonna go triples, but decided not to, sold them and stuck with the 350Holley! It goes hard enough for my liking!

Its pretty awesome to drive! Because everything is new it handles better and stops real good too!

UPDATE: 29 JANUARY 2006

Car has been down the dragstrip with the poorly tuned 350 Holley - 15.5 @ 85mph, then 14.852 @ 95mph once i sorted the launch and shift points. I was a bit suss on the 14 second run, although it felt faster, to knock off a bit over half a second..... I'll take it down the strip again and back it up! Although the tranny's seen better days, and the 3.08:1 diff ratio isnt the best for good times down the 1/4!!

I've gone back on my word and purchased another set of triple SU's for $100. They will be getting rebuilt by someone different and dyno tuned and fitted for me (i'd rather not mess with it). I'm really tempted to get a bigger camshaft while im at it! The XU-1 cam is great, sounds beefy and has proven itself, i think bigger will keep me happy!

The photos are not up to date, and i will re-update this post when i get some more time, but for now a quick update did the job!

I can see i have some competetion coming from the brisbane region too - Sarsha's red UC has hit the strip, and harleynormal i believe also (although did not note his time). Keep goin hard guys!

If anyone has some suggestions for me, bring it on!!

What is a 179HP? Please take me through it.
I remember the EH with the 179 flag on the boot, surely it didnt have 179 horsepower and was 179ci, or is it High Performance. Did it come with a whole lot of go fast bits?
Though im sure Keithys is putting out a bit more than that.

From what others have posted the HP was used to distinguish the 179 from the 163? on the production line before the engine size was used and is not a "High Performance" motor.

179 HP doesn't mean it has 179 Horsepower (it only had 115) HP was cast on the side because it was the "High Performance" motor when it was in the EH range as there were only 149 and 179....after a while HP was dropped and they cast 179 into the side. A similar think happened to the 308 in the VK range with the switch to 304....308 got HP the side

There is no difference between a HP and a 179 block.....They do however seem to get more $$$ for them.

Theres a UC similar colour, with those wheels for sale at "PICK PAY AND GO" in Ringwood Vic. They're asking $1500. Quite clean inside. T Bar auto. Would be a good daily driver or project. Worth a look.

Okay, so there is nothing really special about a 173HP motor other than it is bigger than a 149 etc?

Rodomo, it's at the Holden and Ford wreckers in Kilsyth isn't it? I was tempted to ask them if i could just buy the wheels but I had no cash at the time. I should go and trade them some stockers so they can still sell the thing afterwards.

Nice looking car anyway. I wish mine had some more unique wheels. Keith, are yours 13"s or 14"s?

Devilsadvocate - its 179HP!! The 179HP was the "High Performance" motor in its day, but only cos it had more cubic inches than little brother 149!!

My wheels are 14", had to get 14's to accomodate the 'larger' front brakes! I've painted my wheels silver now too - where the blue used to be! I'll take a photo when i get home from work! 115HP is how much power they had standard - to be quite honest, i wouldnt be lying if i said i had about 179 Horse Power at the flywheel! Wouldnt that just be funny if that was the case! Onto the dyno in the next few weeks - we'll just see how much the old girl REALLY has!!

Okay, I never for a moment thought 179hp meant 179horsepower, I was trying to get the low down on why this motor appears so special and why Keithy decided to use it rather than a "younger" variant? Especially since its probably 40+ years old?, although the basic design of the red six remained unchanged for nearly 20 years, surely the later motors were "slightly" better?

I can't imagine the increased capacity Holden sixes being even "slightly" better despite the obvious power increase because of the displacement growth.

The only real improvements I expect were just the blue and black motors.

I may be wrong here, but don't the smaller displacement red sixes actually run a decent power:economy ratio where as the 186 and even more so the 202 are just "Let's bore it out, pump some more fuel into it and see if she goes a bit harder" kinda job? Someone told me a few months ago that the 161 was actually a refined engine for its age, and basically everything after that before the blue motor was substancially worse.

I've heard some good stuff about the 173 also...

There's never been anything decent about that ratio in a red motor, 1950's engineering at best.
Optimum cylinder size is 300-600cc, for efficiency. ie power/fuel ratio, so any 6cyl in the 2 to 3.5L range can be designed to go well.

Hey guys, just digging up something from the archives!! I thought it was time for another quick update!!

7th March 2006:

HP still running strong in the engine bay! Still running bodgy 350 Holley until the triples return to my posession!
