Hi,

Here is my LX 4 door.

Car was sitting in my shed for 6 months after I bought it whilst I was saving up some money for the build and getting my plans and a few other things sorted out.

It has a little bit of rust and a few dings but overall it's a great shell.

LX SL

202, trimatic, 3.08 banjo

Plan is to have it stripped back, rust cut out and fixed up, new paint, retrimmed custom interior, new engine, auto and diff and upgraded brakes.

Thanks.

So, I needed to strip everything off it to see what I had and get it ready for panel & paint.

Pretty sorry looking 202, but it ran really good actually

Disconnected everything then dropped the lot out in one go...

Easy to move about as a rolling front end  :)

Ummm That looked like it was a nice bumper before you lifted the car with it. :/

So what are the plans for this beast?

Hi Lamo,

Nah, the front bar was shagged mate. Lots of dings and was badly out of shape sadly. They are expensive these days!!

Hoping for to be a really clean cruiser with good power & nice comfortable interior.

Thanks.

So, found a few surprises when I pop the front and rear screens out :(

Attached File  GMH12.jpg   45.43K   25 downloads

Attached File  GMH16.jpg   42.56K   22 downloads

The front was the worst on the drivers side but the rear was a bit shitty all around....mainly just pin holes.

Attached File  GMH17.jpg   49.21K   24 downloads

The car has had a tow bar fitted as some stage and this has resulted in some holes in the boot and a bit of rust to boot...not too bad but unexpected.

Attached File  GMH14.jpg   46.67K   19 downloads

Attached File  GMH11.jpg   52.87K   22 downloads

The inside isn't too bad considering the water which would have been coming in the front.

Thanks.

Here is another shot of the drivers floor pan, just surface rust luckily.

Attached File  IMG_0857.JPG   64.15K   24 downloads

This is in the boot, pretty crappy boot floor on both sides.

Attached File  IMG_0858.JPG   85.97K   21 downloads

Attached File  IMG_0860.JPG   56.35K   18 downloads

Attached File  IMG_0861.JPG   57.54K   20 downloads

Attached File  IMG_0862.JPG   57.36K   19 downloads

When I got the rear bar off I found another secret.  It's had a hit in the back.  Bit snotty around the tail light buckets and it had the SL chrome trims which have to go.

Attached File  IMG_0863.JPG   42.27K   18 downloads

The whole beaver is pretty crappy really.  Will need replacing.

Attached File  IMG_0864.JPG   34.37K   20 downloads

So that was the body striped of everything and made a roller.  So it's off to the panel beaters to undo the nasties of the past and make it awesome!  :)

Attached File  IMG_0866.JPG   85.25K   24 downloads

Update soon.

OK, so while the car is away I've been preparing the new bits...

Here is the powdercoated black bare front end - the original one is in the car so it can remain a roller.

Attached File  GMH19.jpg   79.83K   25 downloads

See the upper control arm holes are in the lower position....anyone know what this front end is out of?

Attached File  GMH20.jpg   58.36K   22 downloads

Gave the diff a clean up, quick sand, prime and few coats of black.

Thanks.

Are HQ brakes going to be enough to pull it up?

Hi Neil,

I reckon. The car won't weigh any more than it would if it had a 308/tri/banjo and the HQ brakes are a huge upgrade on torana so should be fine.

Thanks.

Thanks AD.

From that it says I have an LX RTS front end...which is good as it's an LX RTS car too :)

Thanks.

Hi,

So while the cars away, a few other things have been going on.

Picked up the LS1, auto and loom/pcm and dragged them home.

Attached File  GMH22.jpg   49.08K   19 downloads

Attached File  GMH23.jpg   44.29K   19 downloads

Then, spent some time giving it a wipe over and a pressure wash and stripped it of all the extra's I don't need like pwr steering pump, a/c compressor, engine mounts, exhaust manifolds....

They aren't a great looking engine sadly (except from the back with out the trans fitted - they look great from behind. haha :) ). Will need to be creative when it comes time to dress it up.

Thanks.

Hi.

Few bits and pieces have been arriving.

- Moroso 20140 sump & remote filter (doesn't come with plumbing for the remote filter though. Weird?)

- Tuff mounts

- Caste Auto headers

Attached File  GMH25.jpg   44.62K   18 downloads

Attached File  GMH26.jpg   50.93K   18 downloads

Did a bit of trial fitting and seems (as advertised and advised by a few people) that the CAE pipes won't fit with the factory commodore starter. Looks like a CAE starter is on the way.

Attached File  GMH27.jpg   50.47K   16 downloads

Attached File  GMH28.jpg   61.42K   15 downloads

Also been looking into fuel systems and engine looms.  I think I'll source all this gear from the states...

Thanks.

Been looking at wheels and need a bit of help.

For the front, does anyone know if a 17 x 7 with 4.5" backspace with a 215/45/R17 will fit without having to trim anything on the front guards or in the wheel wells?

For the rears, I've been told that a 17 x 8 with 4.75" backspace with 235/45/R17 will fit no worries...anyone gone bigger or know if this is true?

Thanks.

I think you will find the CAE starter will not fit with the Tuff mounts. The CAE mounts raise the engine about 7 mm higher than the Tuff mounts. This extra height is required so the CAE starter clears the k-frame.

See if you can get the CAE starter on the basis that if it does not fit you can return it.

Hi ls2lxhatch,

The CAE starter is fully adjustable and when it the pointing down direction, it clears everything with the tuff mounts.....it even clears the Castle extractors!

Attached File  GMH29.jpg   36.48K   20 downloads

I've been plugging away getting to engine small bits and pieces sorted. Since I'm not running the A/C or power steer obviously the commodore accessories belt won't work.

Attached File  GMH30.jpg   58.24K   19 downloads

I figured out the easiest way to run the belt and so needed to replace the smooth idler near the alternator with a ribbed one...

Attached File  GMH31.jpg   51.95K   21 downloads

Attached File  GMH32.jpg   51.49K   18 downloads

Measured up the new belt length needed and ordered one from the USA...came fast too :)

Attached File  GMH33.jpg   45.77K   19 downloads

Fitted it up and voila...another job ticked off the list.

Attached File  GMH34.jpg   56.16K   19 downloads

Thanks.

Hi ls2lxhatch,

The CAE starter is fully adjustable and when it the pointing down direction, it clears everything with the tuff mounts.....it even clears the Castle extractors!

.

That is good news.

The clearance between the starter and the k-frame is affected by the angle of the motor to the k-frame. You will know exactly how much clearance you have when the motor and gearbox are bolted up to the car.

The CAE starter I had in 2007 hit the k-frame with the CRS HQ-WB engine mounts which I believe are the same height as the Tuff mounts. The CAE starter I had was not adjustable although it would only require drilling more holes in the adapter plate. The CAE starter I had in 2007 does look a little different to yours.

This picture shows my CAE starter with CAE mounts. The bolt on the starter body hit the k-frame with the CRS mounts.

CAE_Starter01_zps2ec84411.jpg

CAE_Starter02_zps444fec39.jpg

The CAE starter you have has a slightly different body and the offending bolt has moved. It looks like the front of your starter motor has provision for the bolt in the old position. The wiring is also different.

Thanks, looks like the starter is definitely different.  There will be no issues with the k-frame and starter with it on any angle. The headers are a different story.  The drivers side is fine and clears the starter, k-frame, steering fine but the passenger side (which doesn't have a starter or steering to worry about) hits on the k-frame badly so I will be doing some mods.

Thought I'd post up a few of the bits that I've been collecting...

Shiney bonnet hinges, latch and bolts

Attached File  GMH35.jpg   60.07K   16 downloads

MSD fuel pump and filter/pressure regulator and EFI fittings

Attached File  GMH36.jpg   56.93K   15 downloads

New PSI conversions hotrod loom from the the states...just a few wires to tie into the car and it should fire right up...in theory   :)

Attached File  GMH37.jpg   68.33K   16 downloads

o2 sensors

Attached File  GMH38.jpg   35.76K   15 downloads

VN V8 booster and 1" master cylinder.  Will need to mod the pushrod to suit which I read about on a thread on here.

Attached File  GMH39.jpg   42.02K   14 downloads

Accelerator cable

Attached File  GMH40.jpg   39.88K   14 downloads

Betta auto rubbers full kit

Attached File  GMH41.jpg   51.79K   14 downloads

New x/member

Attached File  GMH42.jpg   51.99K   13 downloads

Also, a hamburger with the lot front end kit and a few other bits and pieces.

I put some time into mucking around with the LH extractor today and have figured out what mods are needed.  The jig must be totally wrong as there is no way this could ever fit.  It has me stumped as to why though as there is so much room closer to the block which is where I am going to relocate the collectors. No pics yet as I forgot the camera and its dark outside now.  Hoping to get this sorted before the body gets home.

Thanks.
