If my diff is back I will join you at Heathote, if not, I will just watch.
How big can you go with the standard pistons? Just curious.
Also, what does the under drive balancer do?

Good news by the way!

Dunno how big you can go with lift regarding piston to valve clearance but my tuner assures me this will work.

Its a 228/234 at .050" with LSA of 112. Inlet lift of .604" and exhaust .609". Plenty of lift and loads of duration. Tuner reckons it will really wake her up.  Time will tell  :spoton:

The underdrive balancer is basically 25% smaller diameter than the standard one. Since I plan on spinning this thing much faster than before I was going to upgrade the balancer anyway and I've read the smaller balancer helps two ways.  1. Smaller rotating mass so will rev up faster and 2. Spins the accessories 25% less which reduces load on the motor at high revs.....more rwkw basically.  I have history to prove it at least to me. lol. Remember my fastest ever pass (12.7 at 109mph) was the pass when I threw the belt at 1/4 track but kept my foot into it. That was 0.2 faster than I'd ever gone before. The fact no water pump and alternator were loading the engine was worth that much time.  So for the extra $100 for the underdrive balancer over an aftermarket performance one....it's worth it to me. :D

That cam sounds like the same as mine. Only, I think mine has around .575 lift by memory. I didn't keep the specs.

Will the balancer still keep your accessories turning fast enough in traffic?

I had some spare time today so pulled the old valve springs and fitted new spring seats, double springs, seals and retainers.

Ended up making a tool to speed it up a bit as my regular valve Spring tool was taking forever and was too fiddly.

I've got the front of the motor off now ready to swap the cam over... Should do that tomorrow if I get a chance. Then I'll be waiting for the converter and box to be built...still a few more weeks

this may be a dumb question, but why doesn't the spring drop when the spring is no longer holding it?

Few ways to skin that cat.

You put the piston for the cylinder on the top of its stroke so the valve will only drop about 2cm. Then you can put compressed air into the cylinder via the spark plug hole to hold the valves closed. That's the proper way...but not what I did.
I used rope! Lol. Basically feed some rope into the cylinder via the spark plug hole then wound the crank over until it compresses the rope against the valves. Then pop the springs off. Follow the process for each cylinder.

I've used the rope trick for years. I actually prefer it even though I have the adapter for compressed air. Whatever works I suppose

Happy days, she is back together and turning tyres again.

Fired her up and bloody hell she was angry. Stalling, farting, no wanting to idle etc. Eventually the PCM relearnt the idle tune and she would at least idle. Checked all vitals and all good so called up the tuner and booked her in. She was tuned this morning and made 270kw at the wheels which is a huge gain over the 221 it made last time.

Drove her around for a bit and just awesome. Nice and well mannered when want to drive miss daisy but an animal when you mash the pedal. Actually laughed out loud a few times. Still has a very respectable idle note so am pretty happy with the combo I selected.

Hoping to take it to the track in a few weeks for a bit of fun and to get real world comparison...

Time for a beer!

That's great news. Very respectable numbers and not for a huge outlay.
Should be a real blast and a whole lot of fun to drive on the street.

Will attempt to make it to the track and watch you tear it up.

Can't wait to get out beside in the future.

Thanks lads.

If it goes 12.0 I'll be thrilled. Would love to dip into the 11's :)

Can't see why it wouldn't.  Mine was 255RWKW, 3.9 gears, 3500 stall and did 11.9's consistently back to back.

100% if you can't break into the 11's you seriously need to address your driving ability. You should run an 11 easy with good street Tyres & guaranteed 11.7-11.8s with slicks

I need to readdress my driving ability?
Mine made 265rwkw and I ran 12.08.
Went back out with 300rwkw and can't get better tha 12.52

Work that out!

On that theory, as long as I'm not in the car you should be fine ;)

My stock ls2 crate engine with extractors and tune was making 245rw kW and I was running 11.80's on $160 245/40 17 nankangs with my sunbird, so yes you boys need to learn how to drive or setup your car up better if you can't crack an 11 with all that extra grunt.
Btw I was only running 3.55 diff.

Don't go easy on me now Gerry.
If he can drive properly, and stops pussy footing around, he should be able to clean me up good and proper.

In all honesty and jokes aside, I think his biggest issue will be traction. It's got 3:5's in bum which may help limit the wheel spin, but tyre diameter will govern spin or traction.

At the end of the day it will run what it does, and he will have a hell of a lot of fun doing it!
I actually hope he does go into the 11's and not a very low 12. If he does run a low 12, he will always be chasing that elusive 11!

frOcking hilarious posts fellas, thanks!

To be honest, I can't wait to run it.

221kw, stock converter, 3.5 gears = 12.9 at 107mph
269kw, 3500 stall, 3.5 gears = ??? at ???mph

Hurry up and set a date to race! If my calendar is free, count me in. I haven't raced for something like 6 to 8 years, will need to remember where the accelerator is. Green light still means go yeah? ;)

The best I've ever run in my rig is 11.77 @ 115 MPH, but back then I had massive 4-into-1's, and was making 245 rwKw. Now I have tiny Tri-Y's, and making 230 rwkW. I dare say I will be back into the 12 sec zone, especially on street tyres.

Would be awesome to get a few Torana's together. I have another mate Grant (LXSS5L) with the red 355 hatch (10 sec car) who is looking to race as well.
