It seems like the "sunburst met." lj gtr that was at Toranafest is the only non modified lj gtr left for us to use as a reference point, even that one is restored, so we can't be sure going by that one either. It's a nice car though. There is also hardly any press release or advertising photos of Lj gtr's to work from apart from the orange one in the advertisement at the start of this thread and the green one at a rally that they sometimes change to an xu1 in some pics.

Hi James,
the tail pipes on the sunburst gtr were wrong,
they were to big in diameter.
the gtr tail pipes are the same diameter as a xu1.
I gave marty the photos so he can get his right to look like factory as they were, they were originally chrome tail pipes x 2, and certainly not single as dave mentioned.
Regards John.

Thanks John,
To be honest I can't remember taking notice of the exhaust on the sunburst gtr. I just remember that the car was pretty much stock unlike most lj gtr's around now.

Hi Dave,
I had a lj gtr too was my first car and it had its original muffler when bought it.
I didnt have many photos from behind it but certainty new what they looked like.
I helped a member in my xu-1 owners to get his looking right as it came from the factory, as you see in the photo's I took some years ago at toranafest or the members car I helped.

Regards John.

A one off custom stainless muffler for $500 is very good value. It's not a half hour job.

If you need to get one made you could contact "rapid exhausts " at Fairy Meadow, near Wollongong. Apparently they used to make reproduction xu1 mufflers, I'm sure they probably know something about the gtr's too. They've been around for a few generations running the business, so they probably have experience with these.

IMO $500 for a one off custom stainless muffler sounds fair enough considering the cost of materials, wages and overheads that all have to be taken into account.

Gary Mason at Custom Exhausts in Osi Park (I think) had a Walker one for sale recently

Might pay to ask him if he still has it

I think it was just the regular XU1 one... just swap out the tips for something more suited (maybe)

Putting the drooped tips on a xu1 muffler sounds like a good idea. Not stainless but cheaper.

My friend who I helped do his, he just fitted a steel muffler and welded stainless tail pipes and polished them up, and don't they look like chrome tail pipes.

Marty,
When I had my gtr in the early 80's, I put on a complete stainless steel exhaust on the gtr,I even put xu1 headers on it and modified the intake manifold so they would fit on.
So I had the complete from front engine pipes to the collector and to the muffler on stainless, that cost $180 the xu1 muffler was a $126, and came with 30 years warranty and the warranty ran out last year.
When I sold the gtr in 1989 I removed the whole exhaust system and took off the headers and put on the original single pipe header and had a new exhaust including the gtr muffler when I sold it.
So when I purchased the xu1 in 89 I fitted the whole stainless system on it and never had a problem ever with it.
The exhaust was done at everlast exhaust centre at bankstown.

Regards John.

great Mileage Exhaust System John,

I would of thought the Stainless would of cracked at the welds, unless there was not any welds. Dave I
