G'day All,

I was considering fitting a four speed automatic Commodore transmission (T700) in my LX Torana. I just have a few concerns that I'm hoping someone could help me out with please?

     1. My 308 block is drilled for M21/Trimatic. Will I have to re-drill it or would an adaptor be ok?

     2. Will the transmission fit in the tunnel? Or will it require modifications?

     3. Will I be able to adapt a standard Trimatic shifter or will I have to use some sort of after market shifter? I want it to look standard.

I was hoping to hear from someone that may of tried something similar before.

Cheers,

Napes

Hi,
I have the fully electronic 4l60e in my LX. Same body as 4l60 (th700).

1. Your block will need pattern change...or adapter
2. The box will fit but tunnel needs massaging with big hammer on the passenger side where the gear selector goes.
3. I've no doubt a patient person could mod the torana selector and linkages to select gears on the box (after pulling hair out) but I mucked with it for an hour before deciding to buy a B&M. Problem solved :)

You'll need a custom tailshaft.

Good luck

Thanks for your reply.

How good are the adaptors, or they successful?

Needs massaging with a big hammer? That doesn't sound real subtle. Do you mean I have to belt the living sh!t out of it???

Thanks again...

Cheers

No idea about the quality of the adapters, never used one.

It doesn't take much bashing to get your clearance for the shaft. I had no concern doing it. Mines looks factory once painted up etc.

Use your Trimatic shifter .Just have to pull the main pin out of it and put the selector lever on the other side and reinstall the roll pins

^pretty sure that doesn't work, the selector lever is mounted off centre so flipping it around doesn't move it far enough to the other side. You can get 'left side' shifters anyway, from late UC's and WB's I think.

Wouldn't be a big job to cut off the tab on the lever and weld it to the LHS but you'll have a nightmare trying to get linkages at correct length to fit between the tunnel and trans.  You could muck around with it for a week and it be not right.  I think the aftermarket cable actuated shifter is the go.  You could mod the factory shifter to actuate the cable and cable hardware on the trans selector if you absolutely had to have it stock looking inside.

There's also a factory cable shifter that came out of hq+ with t350/400's, so a few options if you wanted to keep the console etc stock looking.
