You have 4 sway bars ? :P

RTS models have an RTS badge on the glovebox lid (unless the dash has been molested)

RTS Front subframe will have the upper control arms bolted in the low position and from factory would have some solid tube spacers as well as the fork type alignment shims on the horizontal bolts that hold the upper control arms on.

And a front sway bar too.  The springs were different too from memory but I couldn't tell you the exact difference - I always ditch std springs so I have never paid attention to be honest.

Interesting read about the differences between LX RTS and UC RTS.

According to the GMH brochure for the HZ, RTS includes changes to bushes, anti-roll (sway) bars, spring and damper rates as well as the geometry changes. Its a bit light on the specifics (is only general public marketing) but I would assume that similar applies to Torana RTS.

Solid tube spacers spacing the top inner arms in towards the centre of the car? In addition to the shims? I never knew they came with those. How long were they?

The spacer was like a thick washer (maybe 5 mm ) to reduce the size of the shim stack.

I thought it was radical tuned suspension.

So if my '76 LX has a front sway bar, would that mean it has been modified from standard? The car itself has had many mods (304 efi, 5sp, 9" diff) although I am soon going to dismantle the front end down to give it a freshen up. It has a sway bar and REALLY low springs which i want to lift by an inch or so to give it a bit more clearance.

SS Hatches had front and rear sway bars from their release in Feb 76.  I'd be suprised if the SLR5000s were not the same but I have never owned one, nor looked into it so I am not sure on them.

LH and LX SLR 5000's both had standard front and rear sway bars.

RTS first appeared on the Sunbird in Nov 76 & then on the 6 & V8 Toranas in Mar 77.

Only RTS cars got a factory rear sway bar.

Prior to RTS, only the SS & SL/R (& GTR in LC/LJ) got a front sway bar.

RTS was lots of things in the day and it varied a fair bit between the 3 x types of RTS used on LX and UC, but all that really matters now is that you have the RTS suspension geometry, sway bars and solid steering rack mounts (as per A9X or UC RTS methods, different but does the same job). Rest is all academic as it'll be changed like rubber compounds, springs, shocks etc. You are lucky with U sized Toranas as it is all unboltable stuff and can be changed, but with HZ the suspension geometry was changed within the chassis rails making it harder to adapt to HQ-6/77 HX without changing the rails.

Not necessarily, mine's 9/76 SL/R and came with front and rear 'anti-sway' bars (a.k.a. stabiliser bars) from factory.

It doesn't have RTS.

LH and LX SLR 5000's both had standard front and rear sway bars.

LX SL/R's had front and rear too.

Note: They're anti-sway bars people, they don't make the car sway, lol.

the 3 x types of RTS used on LX and UC

There were 3 types of suspension but only 2 types of RTS I believe.

LX Torana with standard suspension

LX Torana with RTS (RTS phase 1)

UC Torana all had RTS (RTS phase 2)

No there is 3:

LX RTS. This is heaps lowered upper control arm mounts, changed suspension components (shocks, rubbers etc) but from memory retained the rubber mounted steering rack. This is what was first introduced on Sunbird and later on Torana as Dr Terry says.

A9X RTS. Used UC type upper arms, arms mounted high again (I think) and LX rack but rubber mounts replaced by solid mounts (alloy from memory).

UC RTS. Solid mount rack and a few other bits and pieces different to A9X.

I'm being prety general with the types, just doing it from memory and listing the major changes, there were other bits and pieces too.

Ah, okay.

I thought the A9X was still LX Phase 1 RTS but with a few different components whereas the UC RTS was a design overhaul, hence phase 2 RTS.

A9X was actually closer to UC, it used the UC upper arms and solidly mounted an LX steering rack.
