As a side note, I see no logical point of cranking a motor till you see pressure, a, any pre lube will be wiped away and b, starting a motor is usually the quickest way to gain "usable" oil pressure but I cannot say for sure at what point (RPM v oil pressure) boundary friction stops and the oil wedge floats the journals.
In the above case, where you have no idea if the pump had been primed, or, if there was any other failure, such as a missing gallery plug or stuck relief etc then cranking the motor first maybe a better option.

In the case of the Holden reds etc, especially with up rate springs I always prime the pump and try to get the motor to fire straight up, if at that point oil pressure fails to build then I shut it down straight away.
I would rather keep what pre lube is there and get the flow straight upto the lifters...

IMHO - that wear is much more than the time for oil pressure to come up, or any fuel dilution..  If you are CERTAIN it wasn't det, check out the oil system.  what was the oil pressure like on the dyno?  How was it measured? etc.

By the way, I'd consider getting yourself a 'oil primer'.  Easy to make if need be, but they are cheap enough to buy that I wouldn't bother.  Negates all the crap about how long an engine has been sitting and the best way to fire up.  Prime it and start it.

I was taught to crank the motor with no plugs to get oil pressure as with the plugs out there is minimal load on the bearings? And can check for major oil leaks... Plus on a efi setup your tuning from a completely blank tune it can take a little fiddling to get it to fire up and idle.

I prefer the later 4Z motors of these series as they have a oil pump on the front of the motor that you can prime with a drill.

But i may indeed look at getting/making a priming setup.

if you are going to crank it over to bring up oil pressure, then do it without rockers as well

To avoid cam damage? these are Overhead Cam engines so stress on the cam is not as brutal, The rocker cover was off when I got the motor and it did indeed have engine assembly lube on the cam. plus I poured oil over all the springs/rockers.
