Ha! Confidence I have, cash to replace the valves again, probably not...
Might go for the "just enough" & keep it minimal though, if only to save compression.
Cheers

So after finally notching the bores, checking & re-checking clearances, we have moved on...

Eventually settled on bloody close to 30 thou valve to block clearance.

Gave everything a clean & bolted down the head, fitted lifters, pushrods, guide plates & rockers.

Rechecked rocker geometry (had to clearance the back of the rockers for a bit more pushrod room)

Im using a 9.450" Crow moly pushrod, could maybe bring it back a little to say 9.350" to make it sit really nicely on the valve, but it looks damn close for now. Spun it over a few times, rechecked tappets again, got it looking like this...

jonesy,

Can you let on a bit more about your head and who did the work, also is there a story with the dividers and and reasoning behind them, i assume it just beats going around a round pipe eh ?

reason is that i have a 161 yella terra , or may be it just has the yt valves with double springs and was thinking of doing it up as a side project and wanted to know some specs like valve size etc as a starting point and any tips on putting a spec together to start working to.

I have a 12 port head like that with the same inlet dividers and it's a yella terror bathurst 1200 item

pretty sure peter  he said that it's a 161 and that's why i was asking about the dividers , it's not a 12 port as i looked at his thread, sure looks like a 12 port with thoes dividers though they are pretty neat

I could be wrong

Yeah I'm guessing a little here but I'd say the dividers somewhat stop the turbulence created by the pole as it goes around it. It's shaped pretty much like a teardrop. It sits about 5mm out from the port into the manifold (larger at this end) and tapers off towards the rear - and it's maybe 30 mm long, made from alloy.
I know plenty of people out there will have made power with the standard post in place, but it's all a bit of - let's try this & see what it does - kind of thing. I had Performance Techniques here in Adelaide do the work. Full credit goes to them.
Valve specs were - inlet 1.72, ex 1.44.
Inlets were custom made & shaped stainless, exhausts are profiled to the same shape HQ items.
Honestly, I went way over where I wanted to go, but it became a project. If I were to do it again, id step it down a little, keep the pole dividers, use 12 port valves, but stay with the high comp head.

Thats a good guess. Airflow past a cylindrical object (like a head bolt tube) is actually pretty poor; there's a lot of instability and turbulence on the downstream side. The upstream side is fine (no need for any fancy knife edges or the like) but you can pick up quite a bit of flow by extending the downstream side. The ideal shape for a 9 port bolt tube is probably a Kamm tail - being a bit shorter it avoids splitting the port and making it harder for each valve to breathe from the entire port. The only reasons round tubes were used is they were cheap and easy to fit.

Kamm Tail?

Sarcasm aside, is that a cut off teardrop?

Cheers.

TBH I don't know but seeing as any factory headed six is going to be flow-restricted to some extent (turbo or n/a) I'd imagine they would help. But I'd be asking someone who has done it.

That's a whole nuther topic right there...
The 9 port seems to like the divider, except in absolutely blown or turbo cases, it was taken out & tried on my head but actually lost flow. One other thing we could have tried on mine (which helped make 206cfm on another 9 port) was chevy style valve guides with the port bowl dug right out from around them.
Looked awesome too.

New combo, new colour.

I should have the time to put it in this week.

Ok, so its finally in.

Finished plumbing it up, filled it with fuel, oil & coolant, then kicked her in the guts...

Sounds descent, a lot more cam note than before, still fairly smooth & really responsive.

Time to give it a good tune & clock up some miles before dyno time :driving:

Cheers guys. It's all about the little things this time around, those air cleaners are HP(high performance products) items I picked up, more commonly seen on mg's & pommy stuff. Look like they should do the job, with a radius intake like that, I'm surprised I haven't seen more on su's around the place.

I agree , don't throw the triple su carbs mate , I ran a 12.7 with triple 1-3/4 su,s & a C-E solid cam . high comp head . steel crank . Toyota box & 3.9 diff ratio , basic stuff that worked . still have engine though have gone to much larger cam .

I'm pretty keen on keeping the carbs, if they can help get the old girl down the quarter in 12 something (no gas), I'll be happy. It's a manualised trimatic, 4500 stall, 3.9 Borg Warner combo, which is all untested, so should be interesting.
