Im not sure exactly WHY you would put an LH front an an LX...

Personal opinion (albeit one shared by many), but LH headlights suck.

Yea agreed lx round headlights thats why they even had them on the l34s :) just a question 2 btw does a lh slr go faster than a lx slr because in 1977 adr27a polution laws came out and they lost power didnt they ?

^ they bumped up the compression ratio from 9:1 (LH) to 9.7:1 (LX) to compensate for the power loss.

I think the L34's should've keep the LH headlights, after all the L34 IS a LH not a LX

Hi Guys.

Quote - "they bumped up the compression ratio from 9:1 (LH) to 9.7:1 (LX) to compensate for the power loss"

That's not quite correct. There are 3 different stock L31s in the LH/LX Torana range. When they 1st released the LH in early '74 it had the same 308 as the HQ series (9.0 comp & 240 bhp). When the HJ was released the 308 was upped to 9.7 comp & 250 bhp (the cam timing was also changed). This 250 bhp engine was introduced to the Torana range at that time (Nov '74) at engine number HT24413. This engine carried over, unchanged into the early LX series until June '76. In July '76 when ADR27A was introduced the 308 was then rated at 216 bhp, but this wasn't the same type of horsepower, the actual 'real world' power hadn't dropped that dramatically (it was probably around 235-240 bhp). It was a clever ploy by the manufacturers at that time to use the new measuring standards so people couldn't see which engines were effected by ADR27A & which weren't. The new figure was stated in SAE net which is different to the old SAE gross & also different to the DIN & ECE figures they use these days.

Many people will argue how bad the ADR27A gear was, but it mainly effected low down response & starting & drivability on choke in cold weather, not outright power. The 4 main anti-pollution devices used on Holden V8s at the time, were EGR, EFE, HAI & TCS. EGR was closed under full throttle (no effect on power), EFE is that the flap in the RH exhaust manifold to help the motor warm up quicker (no effect once warmed up), HAI (heated air intake) once again to aid drivability when warming up - no effect on power. TCS transmission spark control - limited vacuum advance until top gear, no effect on power in top gear. (no vacuum advance at full throttle in any gear anyway). My point is that a post July '76 LX 308 with full ADR27A was still a potent weapon & not as bad as everyone makes out.

The reasoning given at the time of the L34's release (in the official GM-H blurb) for the use of 7" round headlights was that you could easily fit H4 QH type conversions for rallying etc. Which is what GM-H said the L34 was partially intended for.

The legendary LH PLUS 4 was also blessed with the round headlights. I wonder if we will ever see one again in the flesh?

Just on the LH coupe, yes there is one out there and it looks the same as an LX however it came with a Sailsbury diff. Last I heard the bloke who owns it was making it into an A9X look alike. I don't like to knock other peoples projects, but thats gotta be the dumbest bgucking thing I have heard in a long time.

A lot has been said about auto LH slr5000/s i know of 2 here a barbados green and a jamaican lime and in the last 2 months i tried to buy a creamy coloured one from central qld and a dark green one from Brisbane but both were snapped up fast before i could get there and they both supplied all details of numbers so thats 4 that i know of for sure, so a lot of them survived or they made more than what has been stated and i beleive that a genuine LH slr5000 in original condition would be just as rare now as i have not seen many in the last few years , TREX

I remember one a mate had, he was the second owner. It was white with wait for it, green trim. I have some pics somewhere. It was a special order, I think for a dealer principal.

I have a few questions, What models did Barbados Green come out in? And
If you have a auto SLR/5000 does it make it more expensive/rare?

Barbados Green was an LH colour across the range. There were less auto's produced so they were and are rarer. As for value it will depend on more than one factor. You only need one buyer to sell a car so desirability for transmission type or colour etc is an academic arguement these days IMHO. There is always more than one person in the que for these sort after models.

Just to tell you toddles ,they had radars back then , the cops had like a computer desk with it mounted on and a chair and he would hide just to the side of the road , where you couldnt see them and they used to get mobs of us until we worked out when they had it in town as they only had a couple for the state so they moved them around ,when someone was caught he alerted everyone and then they didnt catch many , TREX
