I have been up to Bathurst many times for the October 1000k race but decided I would go and have a look at the 2015 12 Hour for GT and Production cars. This was an awesome event and I will definitely go again.

The cars, although not on the average person’s new car shopping list, make for a fantastic spectacle: Nissan, Audi, Aston Martin, Bentley, Mercedes, Ferrari, Ginetta, Lamborghini, McLaren, Porsche, Daytona, BMW, Mazda & MARC Focus made up this year’s entry list of 55 cars.

Ticket and camping prices were very reasonable. The pit/paddock areas were open to the public as well as the rooftop above the garages and all spectating areas around the circuit. Shuttle buses ran a regular service to and from the top of the mountain. On the Saturday evening before you could walk down pit lane and view the cars being readied for the race and watch the teams practice their refueling, tyre changes and driver changes.

After the race on Sunday, many of the drivers and team principals hung around while cars and equipment were being packed up. They were more than happy to have a chat and plenty of kids (and adults) got to sit in their favourite GT3 car.

Following are a selection of photos, not of the cars on the track, but of the preparation in the hours leading up to the race start at 5:48am Sunday morning.

Thanks Steve, great pics.

Some of the above looked decidedly more 'second-hand' by the time the checkered flag dropped!

Glad I wasn't picking up the tab for repairs.

beaut pics Steve.....Been to Bathurst plenty of times....but never been to that race.....but might give it a go next year.

Someone said to me yesterday ..""race em  on Sunday...they'll buy ''em on Monday...""...apparently the bloke at the local ford dealer just couldn't seem to find a V8 Focus in the catalogue....lol

The 458 Italia's make everything else there look ugly. Especially the Bentley.

'92 since the last Nissan won at Bathurst. Watched the first couple of hours, watched during the day, then the last hour.

Good stuff and the Nissan deserved the win.

Two of the young Nissan drivers have their background in gaming not motor racing. Wolfgang Reip won the 2012 European GT Academy competition and Florian Strauss was the 2013 German GT Academy winner. A pair of gamers who developed driving skills by playing Gran Turismo!

The GT Academy is an international virtual-to-reality contest that allows the best Gran Turismo (PlayStation game) player to compete for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become a real life professional race car driver. Any player who proves his or her skill in the virtual world has a chance to go wheel to wheel in a real race car on a real circuit to achieve the grand prize – a spot on the Nissan racing team and all the training and licensing needed to race in international events. This is how Wolfgang Reip & Florian Strauss got to drive the Nissan GTR at Bathurst.

We will be there again this year. Will post up some pics if people are interested.

Will be interested to see if the public have the same level of access as previous years given the event is now 50% owned by V8 Supercars?

The event will be televised live and in full on the Seven Network.

It is well worth a look!

What a great race. I watched it all and couldn't walk away. The race lap times where very fast with an official mountain record (at 2m01.567s). These cars hold such great speed across the top. The international GT3 formula also meant we see a great mixture of cars, which makes this format so interesting to watch. The local Daytona did 306.7kph down conrod.

Unheard of speed at almost 307kph.

My son & I attended the 12 Hour again this year.

As I said about last year's event - this is an awesome motor race.

One of the many things that make this such a great weekend is the access that is afforded to spectators. You can access the pits, pit row (once practice/racing is completed), the rooftop area above the pits and all spectator areas around the circuit. We sat in pit row on Saturday evening watching teams prepare their cars and practice refueling, driver changes and tire changes. After the race, many of the drivers, team managers and pit crews are more than happy to have a chat as cars and gear are packed away. The Tekno Team made my day when I was invited to sit in the winning McLaren as they packed up their garage.

The support program was also very enjoyable with races for Improved Production, Combined Sedans and Radical Sportscars.

I have heaps of photos and will put up a selection.

At almost any motorsport event there are always Toranas, so keep an eye out for them.
