Sorry if this topic has been covered before. I did a search but couldnt see anything. Has anyone put LX panels on a UC? Any help on whether its possible and what's required is much appreciated.

G'day Mat, yep there's a few UC-to-LX projects on the go around here at the moment...

So yes, it's definitely possible if you just want to make it look like an LX but if you're thinking of fooling people into thinking it is an LX then I'd suggest you go buy an LX. ;)

If you just want to do the cosmetic stuff you'll need all the front end panels including the inner guards and radiator support panel, plus the rear tail light section.

If you want to get more involved, there are a lot more changes than you would think, major things like the entire dash, floorpan, rear chassis rails and rear suspension mounting points, then a hundred little things like the handbrake setup, fuel tank and even the bonnet release. Not saying it's impossible but you'd end up using so many parts off an LX that you should've just repaired the LX to start with.

Most seem to arrive at a happy compromise of doing the front end and tail lights, and maybe changing the dash.

Good luck and don't forget to post some pics to entertain the troops!

EDIT:

DOH! Bomber beat me to it, guess I took too long finding links...

EDIT AGAIN:

Sorry, fixing links

I would just buy a LX .....its a bigger night mare than you think and you need all the skills to do such a job and at the end of the day its still a UC ....UC's are still a nice car except for those rear tail lights .....lol

If your not super handy it would definitely be cheaper to buy a LX than get a UC and convert it.

Another problem of course is that UC + V8 = engineer's certificate = $$$

And because there was never a V8 option in the UC, the maximum kerb weight comes down to 1157 kgs, which means the maximum engine capacity is roughly a 5.7L LS1, whereas you can use the A9X weight for an LX which allows for a 6.2L LS3 conversion.
