Already has doof doof fitted. Maybe i can play a sound track from a drag car when im driving

Thanks Mick, No def havent decided on a combo but it does seem to be a tried and proven one. Still not sure on which way to go with the head yet. Are the valves big enough in that YT head for the approx target hp? Prob no point in spending say 500 on that when the valves are no good anyway and im sure springs etc should be changed anyway v's spending the coin on a cheaper head, starting from scratch and going new valves, springs... Is the money spent on better head bolt posts and port work on that head worth it you think?

The yella terra valves are plenty big enough but whichever way you go you have to get those figures out of it .The yella terra valve is usually 1.740" but better  if you can get those figures with a 1.68" valve .Change the springs anyway ,you will need about 270lbs @.500 lift and about 120lbs on the seat for a flat tappet solid cam .It will cost about the same whichever way you go depending on the wear in the YT head .

A good starting point for head porting would be Headstud in Melbourne . The Cylinder head is the most important thing to get right ,you should spend money there , also induction, exhaust and camshaft ,these components will make your power . The bottom end is just an air pump and just needs to be strong and reliable enough to do the job.

That head looks like it has had some extra porting. Are the stage 3 YT ports that big? it also looks as if the valves have had some extra deshrouding. If you went to a bigger valve it may be more shrouded against the chamber wall than a smaller valve. If you use starfire rods you can polish the beams and shot pein them for a little more strength. Its mostly in the head with a Holden 6, that's were you need to spend.

regards

I started out with a stage 3 YT, had the ports opened up, webers, good cam etc. Did not run that well until I spent extra money on porting around the valve bowl area tested on a flow bench, which then made a big difference. That combo must have been around the 300 HP mark.

What you need to ask yourself re the $500 starting point is how much it will cost to have the center posts removed, ports taken that far and tubes fitted. I cant see it being much less than $500 personally.

I would treat everything bar the head casting as scrap personally.

No worries. Will go with the YT as a starting point. Will probably pick up that stock small chamber of muzzy aswell just incase.

Exhaust... Ive had no luck there so far with what i want. looks like i will have to go something custom made that will clear the bigger boxed out sump i already have and not require panel beating to the floor which im not keen on.

Unfortunately when they build sumps for the LC/LJ the extra capacity is put on both sides which makes it very difficult to fit a decent set of pipes, as you have already discovered. When I made my current sump, it only bulges to the drivers side.

I have HM's and don't have clearence issues with my winged sump, however, had other clearence issues especially the engine mount and the floor pan. There must be some thing that will fit, what about those original XU1 headers. I think they were in the 73 Bathurst cars, not the split cast iron headers.

Jesus christ thats a lot of money for a set of pipes designed for an engine that probably made 220-240hp on a good day....

What do you guys think of a set of these as a good/easier start to make some custom headers to fit past the floor pan and winged sump? Not cheap, but could save some hassle i guess.

Looks like an easy way out if the pipe lengths are what u need

$625 what makes them so special ??  Poorly angled of the head !!! Not hard to make a decent set of pipes !  Nearly every manufacturer  out there still base their designs and bends of a bog stock manifold !!!

Yeah the pipe length does look short, especially if compared to the HM9C's which seem to be one of the more highly regarded sets

If you are going to go down the route of squeezing every potential pony from your engine, a custom set of pipes would be your best choice

Or if you decide to settle for less, HM9C's and get them modified to fit

Just my 2c. Looking forward to seeing the build progress.

Cheers
