That photo above pointed out by S pack shows a particularly rough bit of work.

Anyway, to my knowledge the production A9X shell recieved a "Patch" whilst removed off the production line before being slipped back in as batches. The factory race shells were also pulled to oneside, some slipped back in for trim etc. Others just painted white and put aside as spare shells for Allan Grice (LOL).

And importantly a patch was available to teams to bring their existing L34 race cars up to A9X specification. It was the teams that installed them and I would imagine little care would have been given as they just needed to be functional. But were all the "patches" use in race cars?

Anyway I wonder why it is mascarading as a budgie...................something needing to be hidden in plain view as suggested by yel327?

There certainly is an interesting history to this car.

The back looks like an A9X, even the exhaust hangers are correct and the patch panel is spot welded in, with the rounded corners at the front. Need Red to take a look!

What is the build date on the adr plate and where does it fall in regards to A9X production?

I don't know all that much about A9X's however did some research and it appears that this particular fuel vapour separator may be exclusive to the A9X?

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Note I haven't looked into the type of separator used on UC Torana and Sunbird.

Could holden have had a left over shell and put it out as a sunbird. Also the engine code L18 isn't that for a star fire engine. When was the star fire engine first fitted. It may have been a prototype for the upcoming uc?

Correct Dave, L18 is the Starfire 1.9 litre engine. The first UC Sunbird hatchbacks and sedans were fitted with the Opel 1900 engine. The Starfire engine wasn't released until September 1978.

Special drag car being an auto and 3.90:1 rear axle? New way to showcase the big block Holden engine?

Can you get the chassis number off the shell - i'll get it checked to see if it matches the PSN.

Sounds more like the car may have been a test mule for the Starfire engine rather than a prototype for the UC Sunbird.

By December 1977 the tooling for the UC floorpan would have been well and truly completed so I doubt the car would have been a test bed for the Salisbury diff.

For the benefit of future search engine queries (which can't read photos):

It would appear all the numbers align and that's an auto compliance plate too.

My guess would be some peanut engineer said the original xmember wasnt strong enough for the v8.

Wierdo car alright! I have a 12/77 LX C77 just before this one (just over 1000's LX chassis numbers earlier) and it was still 12/77. They were still pumping out LX's at this stage as there are only 192 HZ PSN's (or maybe even some UC's) between the car of this thread and the one I have.

That is definitely a trimatic crossmember - the big mounting holes give it up.

The UC X-member had additional reinforcing but not like the one pictured above, like this -

Would the x-member strengthening have been required with a split propeller shaft design?

If so the piece of square rod welded to the LX xmember may be for that reason.

Just realised Garth's UC xmember is for manual transmission.
