You could alway try and locate some good second hand ones Tony!
No such thing, I wouldn't reckon. It can't be as hard as I'm making it, I just assumed there would be more than enough in each bag of channel, not barely enough.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but does the window need to be removed from the door to fit the bailey channel or does dropping it to the bottom of the door suffice?
Also what contact cement is suitable for this job?
Cheers,
Brent

bought new Bailey channel from rare spares for my LJ.
When fitted, window was as tight as "F", just to push up/down by hand (no regulator fitted yet)... even with all quater glass frame screws loosened to bump it forward as far as possible, still tight.....sprayed with silicone dry lube, still tight... dont even mention Graphite powder..still tight :(
To the point pushing up on the window, literally rocks the car. Crazy.
So going back to Rares with my samples tomorrow.
The new (tight) bailey is closest to my finger tips. The older looking bailey appears thinner in Xsection.

Dave,
Did the 80's bailey channel improve with use?
I recently had my windscreens fitted using a Rare's rubber kit. The rear screen is ok but when the chrome mylar goes in the front rubber seal it's too narrow to fill the gap in the rubber. I contacted Rare's about who took a couple of weeks looking into it but then said that the replacement new front windscreens are 3mm narrower and this makes the mylar not fit properly. When I mentioned this to the windscreen installer who's been doing the job for 40 years he didn't agree, but has suggested using the mylar from a Gemini which is about 2mm wider. Rare Spares discussed using a different mylar too but couldn't provide a sample to test. So I'm left to purchase new mylar to fix the problem (hopefully).

James.
No it didn't improve with use. I was fortunate enough to get hold of some NOS bailey so I fitted that. I'm sure I still have some unused repro bailey laying around in a box.
I agree with your windscreen fitter, sounds like a croc of shite excuse for the poorly fitting mylar insert. Either the mylar is the correct size or it isn't.
I believe the problem is RSP simply purchase the most suitable closest size generic mylar insert from a manufacturer, they don't have mylar insert custom made to OEM specs.

As for the mylar the Torana version measures about 6.5mm on the crest/seen portion but the opening in the rubber is almost 8.5mm from memory so I don't believe that the windscreen would rectify this like Rare's suggest, especially not in every direction. It's frustrating that you pay around $1k for a rubber kit and the parts in the kit don't even fit the associated part in the same kit.
Then I don't know why the LC LJ firewall grommet kit has a grommet that doesn't even belong on a LC or LJ. The rubber kit doesn't supply the grommet for the rear number plate wire so you need to buy a different grommet kit to get that. There was a few other questionable items I think or items that you'd expect to be included but weren't. Some parts did fit well though.

"Yeah mate looks different for sure bring em back and we'll refund you "
So in store Brisbane, looked at my sample to their oversize product....and opened another new bag which still appeared same oversize...
So I am just refitting my old stuff back in.

The repro bailey channel I bought from Rares in the late 80's or early 90's. Can't remember exactly.

A piece of used OEM bailey channel from the very top frame channel of one of my doors.

Just looking at them, i can see the used OEM piece has the outer side ridge to lock under the channel lip, and the bailey rubber does not appear a real tight fit in the channel, even though used.
Then with the repro product image, it does not seem to have a distinct outer side ridge to lock under the bailey channel lip, and still appears a loosish fit to the channel too, not excessively loose but not tight.

Problem seems to be that no one wants to shell out the $$$$ to have the stuff made to original OEM specifications to suit one brand and only one or two model series of vehicle.
Just find some generic product that is similar and 'sort of fits' and sell that.

Sounds similar to where i work, design something, build it, doesnt fit because it has tolerance stackup, overlook the F.A.I. process - roll out the manufacture ahead of final design approvals, then have to bodge it to fit. :(

The bailey channel that Jaso bought is closer in design to OEM than the stuff that Rares sold me 3 decades ago. So they have updated the product they sell in the last 30 years but it still isn't correct.

Just like the Stromberg choke cable clips that are too big to fit in the bracket on the carb and need to be ground down.

I could've got something similar from Rare's but they had their chance.
